Nick was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of 13, after his brothers noticed that their young brother lose 15 pounds in two weeks and had an uncharacteristically bad attitude. The diagnosis meant that he would have to learn to control his diabetes with up to 10 insulin injections per day, now he wears an OmniPod insulin pump.

The first thing he asked his doctor when he was diagnosed was, “Am I going to die?”, since then Nick has comitted himself to spread awareness about diabetes and offer encouragement to those who suffer from it. He has developed the Change for the Children Foundation, partnering with five different charities, which goal is to raise money and awareness for diabetes.

Between the up's and down's Nick found himself inspired to write a song, "I had a day when my sugar was out of range, and I sat down at the piano and wrote it in 20 minutes," he said. "And it was because I had this strong inspiration. A lot of people have told me it's inspiring." Nick performs in his piano every concert remembering his fans to "don't let anything slowyou down".
