Kristen Stewart: Interview Magazine

The first decade of the 21st century, which is about to draw to a close, is in serious danger of being remembered as the time when fame was measured in pokes, tweets, and the ability to parlay a death-defying (and sometimes not so death-defying) degree of persona recklessness into a reality-television deal. But just as the door was about to slam shut on the double aughts, in walks—or, more appropriately, saunters—Kristen Stewart.

At 19, Stewart has already earned a place in the annals of pop-culture history. This is due to her starring role in Twilight, which—in case you’ve somehow managed to elude word of its all-encompassing death grip on young America—is a film based on the first in a series of very popular books about vampires, werewolves, and teenage life in the town of Forks, Washington. Stewart’s character, Bella Swan, is a newcomer to Forks who is forced to cope with the dueling pressures of starting life at a new school and the fact that her prospective boyfriend, the rakish Edward Cullen (played by the rakish Robert Pattinson), is a 104-year-old undead bloodsucker.

Given Twilight’s preoccupation with the timeless themes of misunderstood youth, troubled young love, and the intervening forces of darkness, the film’s success isn’t all that surprising. (To date, it has grossed more than $380 million worldwide.) Nor is the fact that more Twilights are in the offing: A second installment, New Moon, hits theaters in November, and a third, Eclipse, is due out next year. But the growing size and complexity of the Twilight machine has had some unavoidable implications:

In the last 12 months, Stewart has become a tabloid regular and a blog-stalked cynosure. The fact that her Twilight character is romantically linked to Pattinson’s in the film has also fueled nonstop speculation that they are involved in real life. BUYING A HOUSE? and GETTING MARRIED? were just a couple of the early autumn headlines. Between filming Twilight sequels, Stewart did a turn as Joan Jett in Floria Sigismondi’s new rock-band biopic The Runaways; even her hair for the film—which was chopped and dyed to mimic Jett’s late-’70s shag—inspired reams of media critique.

Stewart grew up in Los Angeles in a Hollywood family of sorts—her mother is a script supervisor, and her father is a stage manager—and as a kid announced her interest in working in front of the camera. Her second film, David Fincher’s 2002 thriller, Panic Room, in which she played Jodie Foster’s too-quick, too-wise, too-over-it daughter, proved an early indicator of her ability to play young, smart, but not precocious. Her performance in more left-of-center projects such as Sean Penn’s Into the Wild (2007) and this year’s Adventureland has only reinforced that notion. But if there’s a thread that runs through her relatively small body of work, it’s one that’s closely connected to the idea that you don’t have to be old to have soul. With Stewart, you don’t get 19-going-on-35. What you do get is a visceral window into what it means to be young and struggling to make sense of your own life and the world around you—and all the alternating waves of darkness and confusion and brightness and possibility that come with that. In many ways, it’s the unwritten nature of Stewart’s own story now, with its surreal subplots and recent twists and turns, that makes her compelling to watch. It’s true that she might very well be a rebel anodyne to many of her bleached and sprayed-on contemporaries. Or, like Bella Swan, she might just be someone who comes from somewhere, found her way into something exceptional, and is on her way to someplace else. Either way, she’s got a solid arc.

In celebration of Interview’s 40th anniversary, we askedactor, director, writer, and photographer Dennis Hopper—whose connection to the magazine reaches across all fourdecades—to handle the interviewing duties for this cover story. He graciously obliged. He spoke to Stewart, who was shooting Eclipse in Vancouver, from the set of his cable series, Crash, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

DENNIS HOPPER: Before we start, I have a little six-year-old daughter here who’s going crazy right now because you’re on the phone. Could I just put her on for a second to say hello?

KRISTEN STEWART: Yeah, sure.

HOPPER: Okay, her name is Galen. [hands phone]

GALEN HOPPER: Hi!

STEWART: Hi! How are you?

GALEN: Good.

STEWART: It’s really nice to meet you, Galen. [pause] Hello?

GALEN: Hi!

HOPPER: [takes phone] She’s so excited.

STEWART: Wow, that made me so nervous!

HOPPER: It made you nervous?

STEWART: Yeah. I’m just sort of intimidated by kids. I didn’t know what to say.

HOPPER: Well, thank you for doing that. So how are you doing?

STEWART: I’m pretty good. I’m not very good at interviews, but this is a trip. Why in god’s name did you want to do this? You have no idea how cool this is for me.

HOPPER: Well, you’re a really good actress. And my daughter is your biggest fan, so I thought, What the hell? [laughs] I usually don’t do this, either. But you must be going through a lot right now, the way Twilight is hitting. You must have no peace at all.

Seriously this article makes my day she is a window or as I like to call her a lost beautiful soul. She is who is is and that is ok and has a strong sense of herself! You either like her or not and I admire that in her.

Seriously god bless this girl in all she does.

James Woods Talks About An American Girl

Actor James Woods has become a legend in Hollywood through his body of work, and sometime next year (or slightly later), you'll be able to see him in Rod Lurie's version of the Sam Peckinpah revenge thriller Straw Dogs, playing Tom Hedden, a smalltown Southern football coach turned alcoholic who causes problems for a young Hollywood couple, played by James Marsden and Kate Bosworth.

ComingSoon.net recently visited the set of the movie in Shreveport, Louisiana, and we were able to talk to Woods first-hand about the role, as well as a project he's really invested in called An American Girl which Woods plans to direct with Kristen Stewart (the "Twilight" films) in the lead role. Woods bought the script, written by Tim Metcalfe (Kalifornia, The Haunting in Connecticut) and Sean McCarthy, then approached Kristen Stewart "before she was famous," telling her that he wouldn't make the movie with anyone but her, and since reading the script, Stewart has been urgently wanting to get the movie made.

Woods gave us a quick rundown of the basic plot synopsis:

"It's about a young woman who is really destructive. It's that magical time right after you're out of high school. She was the top swimmer and dive champion in school. Now it's a year later and she lives in a little town in Indiana and the place is dying, she's working in a grocery store and drinking and drugging too much and she's showing off in front of this guy who likes her, and gets involved in a big sex thing with two guys drunk one night at a quarry. She gets taped doing it on somebody's phone and in a small town, her reputation is ruined and on a drunken whim, she joins the Marines, which is ridiculous. The ironic thing is that along the way she starts learning these values she doesn't expect. They're just values like you take your brother, they take care of you. It's not like she's a gung-ho Marine. She starts to sober up and then she gets into the Linus Program because she's smart where they teach these women to speak Arabic. When they're in combat situations, women in the Muslim world were not comfortable talking to men soldiers but they'd talk to the women soldiers so these women learned to speak the language and would ask if there were arms or snipers in the house. A tragedy happens and when she comes back to the town where she was a disaster, she rebuilds her life and finds through this tragedy a greater value in herself. It's 'Coming Home,' 'Best Years of our Lives,' it's part of that trilogy. It's a phenomenal story and a slam-dunk Oscar for her."

Woods proceeded to tell us this amazing extensive anecdote about how Metcalfe sent him the script while he was driving across country in a terrible storm. While stopping to get out of the rain in Indiana of all places, Woods read the script in PDF format and decided that very night he was going to buy and direct the movie.

Look for our full interview with Mr. Woods sometime next year, as well as the rest of our report on visiting the set of Straw Dogs.

This is really interesting article and the movie sounds interesting. However I am hoping she gets nominated for Welcome to the Reily's or for something else.

Not to say this movie is not a contender but this guy is so sure he will get nominated and that she will get nominated that I think we will have to see how the others movies she is in stands up to this one. Sometimes it's all about a great story and a feeling in a performance that makes people notice.

Honestly she should have gotten an Oscar for her performance in The Cake Eaters or in Speak. I as blown away by her performance in those movies.

I am sure she will get an Oscar someday but regardless if she gets nominated or not she still is an amazing actress.

Oh and I agree that quote about being normal broke my heart as well. I feel often times people forget actors are human and want to be left alone by the paps and mags and want a normal life and in fact share the same feeling and emotions we all do. It is just there job and they are doing what they love but to have your life be in the spot light all the time can be hard.

I think he just meant that the material she will be working with in this film is the intense kind of work that tends to attract Oscar buzz Obviously nobody can say for sure if she will be nominated but I'm very excited about hearing about KStew playing a challenging and meaningful role (again )

Yes I love the projects and challenges she takes on. She just rocks and is willing to take risks as an actress which is wonderful. She wants to do it all!

OMG some parts of that article broke my heart especially the part of her not going out or if she does it is rare. She is 19 and so young and should be out enjoying life. It is sad sometimes to see what others trade or how others live and when we take so much of the every day things in life for granted.

However I am glad she has her cast mates are there to take her out once in a while and a close family.

The part of her graduating on Eclipse and how she wanted to document that special moment in time for her with taking photos with the extras and wanted to act out the ceremony after she graduated with honors but never went to an actually high school because she left school to act was so bittersweet for me. I think she needed Twilight and how it was meant for her so she could experience all of the things she missed out on like Prom and Graduation from High school. Twilight was her high school experience.

So have to get the interview mag when it comes out it is wonderful and very real. I love interviews like that when they get to the heart and soul of a person.

It's confirmed?!!!!!

Quote:
There’s been a lot of Internet buzz that Kristen Stewart will join the buzz-cut ranks for a movie titled, “An American Girl,” in which she would play a Marine. So is this real or just another Stewart rumor?
Gossip Cop can now confirm, via her rep, that it is TRUE!
“An American Girl,” to be directed by James Woods, is about a woman who after high school finds herself wasting her life drinking and drugging in a small town in Indiana. During one particular night of boozing, she has sex with a guy in a quarry. “She gets taped doing it on somebody’s phone and in a small town,” says Woods, “her reputation is ruined and on a drunken whim, she joins the Marines.”
Stewart’s character sobers up, learns a number of important life lessons as a Marine, and even returns to her hometown, where she rebuilds her life.
Woods, who didn’t want anyone else but Stewart for the lead role, adds, “It’s a phenomenal story and a slam-dunk Oscar for her.”

Not only is Woods excited about Stewart starring, but her rep told Gossip Cop exclusively, “It is a project that she loves.”
