1892: Headstrong Lizzie Borden lives with her wealthy father, stepmother, and sister in Fall River, Massachusetts. Lizzie lovingly tends to her pet pigeons and is occasionally allowed out of her dimly lit, foreboding house, but otherwise lives under strict rules set by her domineering father. When her family hires live-in maid Bridget, an uneducated Irish immigrant, the two find kindred spirits in one another. Their friendship begins with covert communication and companionship that blossoms into an intimate relationship. Meanwhile, tension builds in the Borden household, and Lizzie’s claustrophobic existence becomes increasingly more oppressive and abusive, leading to its inevitable breaking point.
Director Craig William Macneill (whose short film Henley played at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival) and writer Bryce Kass champion feminism and sexuality as they craft a compelling psychological thriller based on the unsolved, much-speculated-about murders of the Borden parents. As Lizzie Borden, Chloë Sevigny delivers a performance defined by interiority, brimming with intelligence and simmering rage, and capturing more humanity than the notoriety that surrounds her would suggest.

Sevigny made the trip to Sundance for the premiere of her drama “Lizzie,” about Lizzie Borden, who was accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1892 Massachusetts. Sevigny co-produced the movie, having long been fascinated with Borden’s life.As for their love scenes in the film, Sevigny laughed: “There was a little bit of steam,” she said. “I wish there was more.”

Kristen Stewart plays Borden’s maid, Bridget Sullivan, who is believed to have had a romantic relationship with her. “I’m such a fan of Kristen,” Sevigny said. “She’s such a firecracker. I’m so honored. She said, ‘Chloe, I want to do this for you.’ There are so many movies I’ve done supporting other women and their performances are stellar.”
She said their chemistry came naturally. “What are you kidding? I think there’s a mutual admiration. I think we both really identify with an outlaw, misfit character.”
As for their love scenes in the film, Sevigny laughed: “There was a little bit of steam,” she said. “I wish there was more.”

“Lizzie,” a 19th-century period drama directed by Craig William Macneill, turns on Lizzie Borden, an abiding mystery and ambiguous feminist touchstone. Her notoriety is summed up by a macabre ditty, the one in which she gives her mother 40 whacks with an ax and then gives her father 41 more. A controlled Chloë Sevigny, who helped produce the movie, plays the title character with rage that eventually seeps through her prison of a home like a poisonous gas. Ms. Sevigny comfortably shares the screen with Kristen Stewart, who, in the role of a sympathetic maid, continues to solidify her standing as one of the great screen performers of her generation.

Very nice words and funny too-"****'s gonna happen" Kristen may be tiny in statue but like Chloe said, she's a FORCE!

I think Kristen has a better chance of winning a Golden Globe someday than Oscar...the Oscars are way too political and they keep nominating the same people over and over again. That's just the way it is. Besides, KS got her Oscar-in France!

I will respectfully disagree with you here Pam. I think that now that Harvey Weinstein is no longer in a position of power that this will help those like Kristen who chose not to work with him. Anyone who is a fan of Kristen's in my honest opinion knew going into awards season that the IFC wasn't going to promote "Personal Shopper" and I also want to see Kristen work with A list talent so the whole project is not all about her and her promotion of the movie alone. For example, look at how working with A list talent has helped Reese Witherspoon's career and unlike most actors Kristen Stewart actually likes to promote her work and she deserves a movie studio that will actually properly promote her work. I also remember how awkwardly Universal studios asked for Kristen Stewart to return to the SWATH movie, Universal knows that Kristen has a strong fan following and she gets and keeps headlines.
