17. Lily Gladstone, “Certain Women”
Not much needs to be said about Lily Gladstone’s performance in “Certain Women” beyond the fact that it was the most memorable in a film starring no less a trio than Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, and Kristen Stewart. Kelly Reichardt’s spare drama abounds in longing, most of which goes unspoken; Gladstone, whose character falls for Stewart’s, is a master of glances and gestures that make her melancholy painfully evident. Listen to the way she delivers the simplest of lines — “I just knew if I didn’t start driving I wasn’t gonna see you again. I didn’t want that” — and imbues it with a world of feeling that’s difficult to endure but impossible to ignore.
