Coldplay Live Review & Setlist - Roskilde Festival, Denmark (5th July 2009)

Coldplay's three-festival stint in Europe was completed last night as their Viva La Vida tour continued into Denmark as they headlined the Roskilde Festival. Plenty of pictures, videos and updates courtesy of Anchorman and Roadie #42 who blogged throughout the whole day and through the concert as well. Coldplay once again played a cover of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.

Setlist:

Life In Technicolor
Violet Hill
Clocks
In My Place
Yellow
Cemeteries Of London
42
Fix You
Strawberry Swing
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Partial Techno Remix)
Talk (Partial Techno Remix)
The Hardest Part (Chris Solo Piano)
Viva La Vida
Lost!
"Roskilde-song"
Green Eyes (acoustic) // Billie Jean
Death Will Never Conquer (Acoustic, sung by Will)
Viva La Vida (Remix Interlude)
------
Politik
Lovers In Japan
Death And All His Friends
------
The Scientist
Life In Technicolor ii
The Escapist (Outro)

Just got home from Roskilde.. WHAT A NIGHT. The guys were absolutely amazing.. Even though it felt strange standing at the 6. row and being the only one of the poeple around me crying, jumping all the time, screaming and knowing all the songs, it was indescribably great! I'd never seen Chris that talkactive before and they really got the crowd into it (quite amazing as Coldplay normally isn't that popular and huge in Denmark.) Afterwards many people told me they were totally surprised and that they would go right home and buy a ticket for the concert in Herning (Denmark) in August. So, after the gig at Roskilde yesterday the number of Coldplay fans has grown hugely and the danish people have finally realized how great Coldplay are.. Good job, guys! [thanks RoosAnne]

Left from a FANTASTIC show yesterday, came home very excited (and with one of the yellow balls they had thrown out!). I was standing in the ~5 line from the front at the left (just off johnny) and had a great view. The lights, the music, the band!.. Amazing!! The crowd was in fantastic mood, the "warmup" was by one of the (i guess) roadies that performed breakdance before they went on stage.. really got people warm! And i have to agree wih RoosAnne, after the gig yesterday.. Coldplay' gonna sell good. [thanks Pwnz0rdude]

More on this concert including reviews, videos, pictures and tweets here onwards.

Billie Jean is my favorite MJ song so I love that they've chosen that one to cover.

I love the way Chris sings it too. Like, really, I'd like his version to become something permanent.

A bonus live blog film

Good afternoon. Here's a little film which we had left over from Sunday's Roskilde live blog, showing the band taking to the stage, complete with pre-gig huddle (and Jonny flicking the Vs...)

And here, in case you missed them, are the other little films from the day:
There are 4 embedded videos in this link. And they are seriously the cutest band that ever lived.

Coldplay's Oracle speaks on the elusive 'Safety EP'

July 7, 2009 - submitted by Matthew, United States of America
Q. Dear wise one, Firece Panda Records Re-released Brothers and Sisters due to its extreme limited first run production. Are there any plans to do the same for the Safety ep? I think I speak for many Coldplay fans whose CD collections are incomplete without it. I understand that the original recordings can be found on other CD singles but it's nice to have the CD itself with album art. If there are no plans I think it would be a great idea....Just a thought. Please let me know what you think. If you can post this I would like everyone to know, if you have an original copy of the Safety ep....name your price. Thank you!
The Oracle replies:
Safety goes for around £1000 these days but I would never sell mine! There'll never be a re-release as it was for demo purposes only. Plus all the original recordings have appeared on official releases now, so you can have those... Check the discography to see the singles which contain the Safety tracks.

Coldplay: “We Just Keep Working, Keeping Our Heads Down”

With Coldplay back on the road this summer for the final leg of its tour behind its most recent album — the Grammy-winning, multi-platinum Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends — Shockhound thought it was the perfect time to catch up with singer Chris Martin and find out how he’s holding up. After all, it can’t be easy touring the world while being married to Gwyneth Paltrow and getting sued by Joe Satriani. Or can it?

Even though the group has been replaced by puppets in its video for “Life In Technicolor II,” the frontman sounded fighting fit — as well as quite convivial — as he spoke to ShockHound by phone from a tour stop somewhere on the East Coast. Along with revealing that his band has already started working on its next album, Martin even asked us for some career advice — but only after we addressed more important topics like boozing, playing video games and making fun of Bono.

SHOCKHOUND: How do I know I'm not speaking to your puppet?
CHRIS MARTIN: You might well be. You have no way of knowing if this is the real singer of Coldplay. Well, I have no way of knowing if this is really you.

SHOCKHOUND: I think we have at least established that I’m not a puppet.
MARTIN: We’re all puppets at times, aren’t we?

SHOCKHOUND: You don’t drink alcohol or coffee, correct?
MARTIN: I don't drink coffee.

SHOCKHOUND: How do you get through the day?
MARTIN: A lot of oatmeal and chocolate. Sometimes, I don't know if it's because I've been listening to Appetite for Destruction, but I've got this new thing for Jack Daniel’s. But not in Slash-ian amounts. More like a thimble. So not really Appetite For Destruction, but more “Appetite For Tidying Up.”

SHOCKHOUND: What are you like when you’re drunk?
MARTIN: I try not to get drunk because I'm a very nasty and aggressive one. The rest of the band would kill me.

SHOCKHOUND: Are you worried that years from now all the stuff you’ve been suppressing is going to come out and it’s going to be ugly?
MARTIN: Yeah, I’m a little concerned, but we just keep working and we keep our heads down.

SHOCKHOUND: When was the last time you wrote a song?
MARTIN: This morning.

SHOCKHOUND: Do you actually write every day?
MARTIN: Every day. That's the way I can make sense of things. It's also very enjoyable.

SHOCKHOUND: Most creative people are a little crazy. How does your insanity manifest itself?
MARTIN: No, I'm normal.

SHOCKHOUND: You can’t write “Strawberry Swing” and be normal.
MARTIN: Yeah, you can. We just did a video for “Strawberry Swing” and it's going to be the best video we've ever done. It’s all lying down on the floor but filming it like you’re standing up. There’s all this animation and it’s pretty clever. I'm just really excited about it and I never get excited about videos. But it doesn’t sound like you’re that normal, either.

SHOCKHOUND: Let’s stick to the subject here.
MARTIN: I’m just trying to turn the tables.

SHOCKHOUND: When you’re stuck in traffic, do you play “Tap Tap Coldplay” on your iPhone?
MARTIN: No, but I've heard about “Tap Tap” and it sounds pretty great. I don't have an iPhone. But Phil, our fifth member, has that thing “Bloom.” It sounds pretty fun. Anytime we do those computer games and you try your own music, I always get a **** mark. I did karaoke the other day in Hong Kong and at the end of it the computer gave me 17 percent.

SHOCKHOUND: Actually, judging by the reviews Coldplay generally gets, that sounds about right.
MARTIN: It's the best review I ever got.

SHOCKHOUND: How do you rate Viva la Vida now?
MARTIN: I feel okay about it. I don't feel as embarrassed about it as I thought I might.

SHOCKHOUND: Why would you feel embarrassed about it?
MARTIN: Whenever we do a record I always feel embarrassed about it. But I'm very much enjoying singing those songs more than ever.

SHOCKHOUND: Did it feel good when Bono called you a "wanker" and "cretin"?
MARTIN: Well, he's called me worse.

SHOCKHOUND: I think you’ve thrown a few things his way over the years.
MARTIN: Yeah, I have. I was never famous enough for him to notice. Now I’ve arrived.

SHOCKHOUND: Does being a pop star beat working at a supermarket?
MARTIN: What do I think? The outfits are much more comfortable. The hours are more flexible. But I do miss the smell of fresh bread.

SHOCKHOUND: Your studio is a former bakery.
MARTIN: I see what you’re thinking. Good idea. We’ll get that set.

SHOCKHOUND: So what do you do next — where does Coldplay go from here?
MARTIN: You tell me. What would you do if you were us — 100 percent seriously?

SHOCKHOUND: Maybe I’d scale things back a little. It would be nice to hear the four of you in a room without the strings and saxophones.
MARTIN: That feels like a good idea to me. Like [Bruce Springsteen’s] Nebraska? I think you might be right. That sounds good. When would be good time to put that out? Or do you think it even matters?

SHOCKHOUND: Next year. You have to stay in peoples’ faces.
MARTIN: The reason you get less records like that is because the cycle between records is so long you feel like you’ve got to do the big thing every time. But I like the idea of a big band doing a little record. We have a lot of songs. I’ve got some good ones, I’ve got to be honest with you. Good idea. What should it be called?
SHOCKHOUND: Let me get back to you on that.

Coldplay/Live Nation to 'give away hot dogs, free drinks and parking'

Coldplay will reportedly hand out free hot dogs at their US live shows for fans who buy their tickets today. Promoters Live Nation have started a 'No Service Fee Wednesday' incentive to encourage more concert-goers during the global recession.

Further perks for fans purchasing tickets midweek include free parking and a soft drink. The campaign has also been extended to cover live dates by No Doubt and Blink-182. Coldplay start touring North America again as part of their 'Viva La Vida' jaunt. The UK leg kicks off in Manchester on September 12.

Portland and George previews: Viva Coldplay... Brit rock, well-done

Beg your pardon, but would you mind if we, well, took over the world? Quietly and politely, Coldplay has become one of the biggest musical acts on the planet. They did it with some dreamy piano pop, a sensitive, falsettoed frontman, and that U.K. magic that's worked for the likes of the Beatles, U2 and Radiohead, writes The Seattle Times, ahead of this weekend's shows in Portland and George.

Coldplay has been accused of being bland, even yawn-inducing (a British TraveLodge poll voted them the Band Most Likely to Put You to Sleep). But that hasn't stopped them from selling more than 30 million albums and trucking in a heap of Grammys. They're so big their tours are massive spectacles only appropriately launched with a trio of continent-spanning free concerts. (And speaking of gigs, they're playing the Gorge Amphitheatre Saturday — not free, but sure to be epic.)

But their fourth album released last year is a testament to Coldplay's willingness to change, evolve and improve to stay at the top. With "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," the British foursome staged a revolution — a well-behaved one, of course.

Before you even get to the music, the album's cover art is Eugène Delacroix's painting of "Liberty Leading the People." And the first half of the name is a battle cry: "Long Live Life."

Dubbed by the band as their "experimental album," "Viva" does forge new territory, for them. Under the guidance of producers Brian Eno and Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire), the songs benefit from Middle Eastern instruments, exotic percussion and galloping guitar melodies. Chris Martin has reeled in his soaring falsetto and wraps the melodies with a deeper baritone. His lyrics veer more political than past albums.

Eno did what he could to break the band of old habits and shake them from their insecurities. They spent time in Spanish cathedrals ("Cemeteries of London" has some Flamenco-inspired hand claps). They built their own pianos. Eno even hired a hypnotist to put them in a trance for some of their music making.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the ever-self-deprecating Martin said, "Things like the hypnotism, all these little crazy experiments that he tried with us was just an effort to say, 'It's OK. Not everybody hates you because you're in Coldplay. Just play some music and don't worry about it.' "

Eno produced a number of U2 albums, most notably "The Joshua Tree." His influence comes through on a track like "Lovers in Japan," with its striding rhythm, or on "Lost!," with its Edge- inspired guitar solo. You can also hear strains of Radiohead, Blur, even My Bloody Valentine. "We look at what other people are doing and try and steal all the good bits," Martin said in an interview with MTV. "We steal from so many different places that hopefully it becomes untraceable."

They have created a blend that's all their own, but they're not reinventing Brit rock. Just doing it well. And for that, the album really wasn't the sort of experiment that proves risky. That's a smart move for a group with a huge fan base to keep happy and gargantuan arenas to fill on their current 100-stop Viva la Vida world tour, which begins in the Portland area tonight.

But fill they will (the Gorge has long been sold out). "Viva" does nothing except solidify Coldplay's place at the top. It was the best-selling album of 2008 and won the 2009 Grammy for Best Rock Album.

And it's arena-worthy for sure. Not only are the melodies soaring and the choruses begging to be sung along to, its themes tackle the big guns: life, death, love, war, peace. That is to say the album is universal. Appropriate for this moment's biggest band in the world.
