Yeahhh. I've been out of the country just before the age when I needed one because my mother was with me.

What is the age when a passport is required to leave the country? I just remembered I was a baby when I went to Guyana.

Abrams Brothers Put Bluegrass Spin on Coldplay's Viva La Vida

Last winter a young bluegrass group called the Abrams Brothers filed off their bus at the CMT offices after a long and snowy trip from their home in Canada.

Groups or artists stop by and perform here once in a while, but this band of two brothers and a cousin was especially memorable. They were definitely a bluegrass group and had the type of chops that would be at home on the Grand Ole Opry stage — which they played in 2005 — but being teenagers, they were also very eager to experiment with the genre.

One song in particular showed that — a well thought-out arrangement of Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida.” I’m glad to see that now they have a video to go along with the track, so enjoy as they walk crowded city streets singing about a once-powerful king on the verge of losing it all.

Watch the terrific new version of Viva La Vida here at the Coldplay forum.

Coldplay's Oracle speaks on Mince Spies and Kanye West collaborations

June 29, 2009 - submitted by Benjamin, United States of America
Q. Is there such a thing as Mince Spies?
The Oracle replies:
There is if you mean a limited edition CD that the band gave away to fans at Christmas 2001. It featured two tracks: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Yellow (Alpha Remix).

June 29, 2009 - submitted by Christina, United States of America
Q. Dear Oracle.. Did Chris write the piano riff in Homecoming, a song in which he collaborated with Kanye West?
The Oracle replies:
The song originally featured vocals by John Legend. Chris met Kanye at Abbey Road Studios in February 2006 when the band were recording a special BBC Radio 2 show. They jammed together as Kanye was recording his album there. This led to the re-recorded version which Chris' vocals and fingers appear on.

18, I think?

Gotta say, I would love for CP to do a collab with Kanye.

Coldplay to play in Tel Aviv, Israel in late September?

Rumours are sweeping the internet about Coldplay coming to Israel this September. This comes not long after Chilean media sources predicting that Coldplay will return to play in South America in November.

There is a long-standing campaign, including online petitions, to bring Coldplay to Israel where they have a huge fanbase. Now Israeli radio sources (Good Morning Israel) are suggesting that they will be playing there for the first time in late September.

If the rumours are true, the group will play in Hayarkon Park, Tel Aviv, on September 30th. They will possibly be playing in Israel in the same month of Leonard Cohen and Madonna.

For Chris Martin, the upbeat goes on (recent Coldplay Winnipeg article)

An hour before showtime, Chris Martin lopes about the concrete backstage of Winnipeg's MTS Centre in cyan socks and baggy warm-up pants. All around him, roadies bark into headsets, and security guards clench their fists. He seems oblivious. A song is looping in his head – Nickelback's If Today Was Your Last Day – along with thoughts of Marco Polo, a recent obsession, writes The Globe And Mail.

A week earlier, Forbes magazine had named Martin and his bandmates the world's most powerful British celebrities. Here in the home of the Manitoba Moose, the rock star appears detached, and a little alone.

Martin has blue eyes like spotlights, a diffident smile and an unfailingly affable air, but his hands are most mesmeric of all. Staring at his long, gangly piano fingers, one can't help but think these genetic aberrations form the heart of the whole hit-making, Grammy-winning schmaltz factory that is Coldplay.

They play the brain-cleaving piano hooks responsible for the band's commercial appeal (over 50 million albums sold) and, sometimes anyway, one of them wears the wedding ring responsible for the band's tabloid allure. Today, there is no wedding ring, something the tabs have interpreted as a sign his marriage to actress Gwyneth Paltrow is crumbling. The accusations, baseless as they may be, clearly gall the otherwise unflappable 32-year-old, as he steps aboard a tour bus to speak with me this week before the first Western Canadian date on the band's wildly successful world tour.

“If it's me in the news, there has to be some negativity,” he says, crossing his legs and leaning back to reveal a hint of a belly about which, he reveals, Paltrow has been ribbing him lately. “The news. They have to say we're divorced, or make fun of our baby's name. You just can't have pure positive news. Why is that?”

His eyes are piercing. He smiles. He wants an answer. “Readers,” I say. “Maybe they can feel better about themselves if they feel worse about you and your wife. It's our daily tonic.”

“Well, that's fair enough,” he replies. “Daily tonic. I like that.” Giving people what they want is something Martin can understand. He is a pupil of pop music, studying closely the subliminal appeal of hit songs by the likes of Nickelback. “I know they're not the most cool band to reference,” he acknowledges, “but they do something better than other people do, you know what I mean? You learn about great pop hooks, power and presentation. And I take my hat off to them.”

He's well aware of the critics who say Coldplay's music focuses too much on a steady formula of vacuous lyrics, cloying hooks and overproduced melodrama. Sasha Frere-Jones, music critic for The New Yorker, termed the concoction “warm milk.” After a New York Times reviewer dubbed Coldplay the most “insufferable band of the decade” in 2005, Martin treated the dig as good advice, promising to “just write better music.”

In 2008, the band hired Brian Eno to produce Viva La Vida , an album with more variety, and less reliance on stirring love songs – but with the same stadium melodies. Martin himself has taken to calling his music “soft rock,” even though he realizes the term's Barry Manilow connotations. “I'm only using it lightheartedly,” he says. “I don't really believe in definitions of music by porousness or erodibility. I don't think the word ‘rock' is valid. I think it's kind of silly. It makes me giggle just to say the word ‘rock.'”

Aside from Nickelback, Martin has found inspiration hanging out with members of Kings of Leon recently. The bands met in Australia, and Martin says they had some “fun,” but wouldn't specify how he passed the time with the hard-drinking Tennessee rockers. “Just imagine it for yourself,” he explains, “a meeting of the soft rockers and the hard rockers. It made for an interesting juxtaposition. I think it will make it into a song.”

After 121 concert dates (each of which grossed about $1-million) over the last year, Martin has seen a lot to inspire, but nothing more so, he says, than the changes in the United States since Barack Obama's election. “Two years ago, touring America, you felt like it was on the downward,” he says. “In general, I feel that even though it's a recession, there's just a great mood and a great optimism. Even little subtle changes like going through customs feels a little friendlier now.” He pinches a slender index finger and thumb together. “Tiny little things.”

He hasn't seen much evidence of the sour economy altering the pop-music landscape, at least not in any way comparable to the Great Depression, when down times sparked a massive movement toward uptempo jazz and swing. “I don't really subscribe to the view that terribleness is essential for art,” he says. “There's always good stuff being made – good times or bad. In bad times, there's just more baggage to hang on it. Know what I mean?

“I'll give you a good example,” he continues. “Yesterday, I watched this film called RocknRolla . … If it wasn't by Guy Ritchie and there wasn't all that personal baggage associated with him at that moment, everyone would just be, like, ‘It's a great movie.' But because people always want to attach something to something else, it changes how they see the film.”

Indeed, aside from the trail of paparazzi that follows him, Martin doesn't seem to suffer enough for his art. He's obscenely rich. He's married to one of the world's most beautiful women. He has a fan base whose monetary devotion has made Viva La Vida the most downloaded album of all time. And he happens to be unfailingly friendly.

So where's the angst? “It's in everybody. It's not just musicians who are insecure and worried about whether their girlfriend likes them. It's everybody. And you know, I don't think it's fair to bang on about your own problems just because you're a musician.”

In fact, during our interview he seems more interested in my problems, showing great curiosity in the bleak future of newspapers and a keen interest in other articles I was working on. He also mentions his passion for the HBO series The Wire , a sure way to any journalist's heart.

But is it all an act? After the interview, I meet another reporter who says Martin had given him the same treatment, asked the same questions. Online, I find more suggestions that he's been buttering up interviewers in the same manner for the past year. Yes, Chris Martin knows how to give 'em what they want.

Coldplay's Oracle on backstage 'Viva La Vida Love'

June 30, 2009 - submitted by James, United Kingdom
Q. Dear Oracle, In Roadie #42's latest blog (number 88), there's a rather nice photo of the band with Dave Holmes the manager man. It certainly makes a pretty picture but I was wondering what is written on the tag around his neck. I normally wouldn't be too interested but I thought it looked like "Viva la Vida With Love" meaning "Live Life... With Love". Now, though, I'm not so sure. Can you please help me out of this calamity? Cheers!
The Oracle replies:
All their passes have Viva La Vida Love on them. It's from a section of a Reign of Love illustration by Jonny.

That was so bloody UN-BELIEV-ABLE !!! i was with Tibujoli and we met some so nice people from Arras. We spent such an evening that we will remember for ever! We managed to get THE perfect location accross the central line just before the stage. At the beginning we were afraid of being a little bit misplaced and then went the opportunity to stand almost on the first row just in front of every single thing that happened on the stage. And that was stupendous and i think we are not able to find the words to express what we experienced. They moved a lot, and made everyone happy in the "Grand' Place" in being everywhere. And they so surprised us : first went a little impro on "the hardest part" with the melody of Billie Jean. Then with many funny parts where Chris wanted to show that his French had improved (indeed he even tried to sing in French, and that was lovely). And then comes the "showing off" part - they moved between stages through the central line and we handed Chris a Tee-shirt. He kind of stopped at our position and took the Tee-shirt, touched our hands looking us in the eyes. Being less than 2 feet from them and especially from Chris, was quite astonishing. Well despite the waiting and the rain (during the first part of the gig) that was really really good. ps: i don't think that glass of water was played last nite [thanks floche21]

well, I come back home for minutes and I'm completely exhausted, there was too much sun and not enough water moreover it rained 15-20 minutes at the beginning of the show. But it was so great. All my photos are blur (?)(floues en francais) so I won't post them... [thanks shini]

Blue skies as Roskilde music festival opens

Copenhagen - US hip hop star Kanye West was the top act Thursday on the opening day of the annual Roskilde music festival, near the Danish capital Copenhagen, with some 65,000 visitors enjoying the festivities under blue skies.

The lineup during the four-day festival that ends Sunday includes Coldplay, Pet Shop Boys, Nick Cave, Oasis, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails and some 150 other acts. Organizers said US hip hopper Lil Wayne had been forced to cancel his appearance on Saturday 'due to doctor-mandated rest.' The music festival also conducts fund-raising, generating funds mainly through bottle deposits.

Efforts to tackle climate change was a theme for the 2009 festival, not the least since Denmark is in December to host a United Nations conference where countries will seek to agree on a new treaty to succeed the Kyoto Protocol on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Visitors to the festival were invited to take "10 green footsteps" including using public transport, riding a bike to the festival, recycling garbage, and switching off electric appliances instead of letting them remain on standby. The Danish relief agency DanChurchAid was to channel funds raised to help victims of climate change in Bangladesh and India. In 2008, the bottle deposits generated some 189,000 dollars. The first Roskilde festival was held in 1971, inspired by similar events at Woodstock and the Isle of Wight.

Roadie #42 - Blog #89: #42 finds festivals a bit of a pain in the Arras

So then, festival season is upon us once again. Roadies tend to look forward to festivals like school-kids look forward to exams. A tour like this is a very long-term experience where all of the challenges and snags get worked out and smoothed over with time. Festivals mean taking that huge intricate show that requires a full day to construct normally and trying to bang it together at high speed (good name for a song that...).

Nobody likes a whiner, so I won't give you a shopping list of complaint. Suffice to say though, that I'm sure the crowds are having the better time here...

Arras is a beautiful setting for a show. A grand old town square in Northern France. The sun slowly disappears behind the rooftops and the windows around the square flicker into light, silhouetting those on the balconies with the best seats in the house.

It's a very warm night indeed and the French crowd are going utterly berserk well before Coldplay take the stage. The Ting Tings get a riotous reception and as our showtime approaches, they're Mexican waving, cheering and singing Viva the whole time.

As I'm writing this in Belgium the following day, The Killers are finishing up their set on the stage behind me. This means I should be busy in my other role, fretting over cables and buttons. I'll have to leave you here and just say it was a top night and hopefully we have another to follow tonight. Here's a wee clip of Chris dropping a little Michael Jackson tribute into the end of The Hardest Part.

Back home. It was a special concert. As I believe in the equal distribution of money, I decided not to pay for this gig but listen to it in the middle of nature, close to the river Dyle, 300 metres from the stage. I've paid for more than one concert, bought cds and tour books, but since I live close to Werchter and since I've already experienced this concert last october (Sportpaleis - Antwerp), I decided to get this one for free. It's quite strange to hear Coldplay amidst nature, the good thing is the sound is so bloody loud on the festival grounds that, being a little farther away, I got fabulous quality sound without damaging my ears. And I could look at the stars during the performance of Yellow, that's a first. So, details for those that couldn't make it. Setlist, same as Arras, but no I'm a believer. Chris covered Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, I think it followed Green Eyes or The hardest part, which he, by the way, dedicated to Lady Gaga, who was also playing the festival. Billie Jean wasn't the only reference to Michael Jackson though, Martin slightly altered the last words of Violet Hill and dedicated the song to the singer. Postcards from far away, I'm not too sure I heard that either, but there was a nice bit of piano with which Martin tied up Politik with Lovers in Japan. Someone else will know for sure. Viva La Vida was, as always, the highpoint of the set, with the crowds going "oh oh oh" for minutes after they ended the song, even when Lost had finished, they briefly started it again. It's quite impressive, hearing this from a distance. Martin did talk quite a lot during the concert, he even apologised for not speaking any French or Flemish. So he seems to know Belgium is a bilingual country, which not many singers do. Overall appreciations: nice concert, no vocal or instrumental flaws, nothing outstanding though, no real surprises. Ok, there were the techno versions of Talk and God put a smile, but I heard those already and they're not that inventive to be honest. I didn't like the new speed of Yellow, by the way. Much too fast. Ah well, I suppose it's difficult to alter setlists because such a large production is a well-oiled machine. Anyway, it was a nice evening, a unique way to listen to Coldplay and it didn't cost me anything. Now I'm off to bed. [thanks walewein]

Noel Gallagher: "Chris Martin is an idiot for not taking drugs"

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has spent an amazing £1m on drugs and enjoyed every minute of it, he told an Italian newspaper and the 42-year-old also labelled Chris Martin from Coldplay an 'idiot' after he claimed not to have taken drugs and slammed the rival band and U2 for using concerts as stages for 'rock politics'.

At the peak of the Britpop era, Noel and brother Liam's hedonistic excesses were well known and their partying was legendary. Gallagher once revealed he had taken cocaine at a Downing Street reception in a toilet reserved for the Queen.

In his interview with Corriere Della Sera, he said: "I look at Chris Martin who says he has never taken drugs in his life and I think he is an idiot. "Doing drugs is the most beautiful thing about being in a rock band. "Up until 1998 I must have spent £1m on drugs then I stopped because it is bad for your health, brain, life and for people around you. But while you use them - except for heroin which kills people and which I have never tried - as you lot (Italians) would say 'Mamma Mia'."

Turning to bands who used concerts to get across a political message, Gallagher stormed: "We get on the stage and play. I have been to loads of concerts where bands don't play they just talk about politics. At a U2 or Coldplay concert there is always a message about poor people or people dying from hunger. OK, but can't we just have a nice evening? Do we always have to feel guilty?"

Gallagher - who with the rest of Oasis met Tony Blair several times at the height of their fame - also spoke of his own political views and said: "I grew up with Labour in opposition. "I heard their policies on education and minimum wages and I thought they were right. Then they got into government and wow, I got to know them. Then as time passed they became like all the others - it was like when you find out Father Christmas doesn't exist. I don't vote any more - anyway it doesn't matter as nothing will change."
This guy is officially crazy.

Rock Werchter fan review: Coldplay class act

An excellent review of Coldplay's concert at the Rock Werchter festival (3rd July 2009) has emerged online at the Coldplay Live forum, courtesy of Bye:

I was in Werchter last night, it was my first Coldplay gig and they most definitely lived up to my high expectations! We were really in for a treat yesterday. Elbow earlier was fantastic, I didn't really know them before yesterday but will definitely give them another listen. Bloc Party started a great party. Then on came The Killers, who really started and ended their show with a bang! Chris Martin would later remark that they're not used to closing for The Killers and hoped they'd be worthy.

Anyway, the wait before Coldplay came on was charged. We'd been highly entertained by the previous groups and couldn't wait to see what Coldplay had in store for us. The announcer had said right after The Killers concert that he'd just seen two cute little kids, a boy and a girl, and finished off by saying, "yes, they're really here!". A JayZ song (I presume) was the first sign that Coldplay would be on soon. This was followed by The Blue Danube by Strauss (I don't know if they do this at all gigs or not). It served really well to build up the anticipation. And then on they came, waving fire sticks. You already know the set-list so I won't go into that.

I had the perfect view of the show. I'd moved into the second compartment early on and never left my spot. For safety reasons, there are these corridors in the crowd that allow security to get close to the people. Quite a few people have had to be taken out as it was quite hot. These corridors break the crowd up into compartments and they can control the number of people that get into the front ones.

This basically means that once you're in there, there's no pushing or shoving or people trying to get to the front from the back. If it's full, it's full and they don't allow anyone else in there. I opted not to go for the first one, out of fear of too much pushing, ended up at the front of the second one, right in the middle, with an uninterrupted view of the stage. Brilliant! At least you can catch some air there, we could even sit down in between concerts. It's only when Chris Martin decided to run down the corridor right in front of me that everyone behind started pushing to get a clear view of that.

Anyhow, about the show. Other bands (yes, I'm looking at you, Oasis) should really take a look at how Coldplay is performing. I love how Chris Martin is so energetic, running from left to right, jumping, giving his all. Coldplay really makes the crowd feel that this show is special and that the show you're watching is the best ever. Where I was standing, the crowd was really into it all, singing along to nearly every song. At one point, I believe at the end of In My Place, as the last notes were somewhat more silent and Chris could finally hear we'd been singing along, he seemed pleasantly surprised. I suppose they can't really hear the crowd from the stage, unless they take out their earpiece.

The big yellow balloons during Yellow and the paper butterflies work really well in such a large outdoor setting. We had fun with those.

Oh, and as for the Lady Gaga dedication. That was more tongue in cheek than anything else. He was winking when he said he'd dedicate it to the people listening to Lady Gaga on the other stage. It was said in a "those poor sods" kind of way. And so, as he was starting The Hardest Part, he quietly let out 'Poker Face' but quickly reverted back to the Hardest Part, which would then turn into Billy Jean at the end.

Earlier on he'd already tried a mash of i forgot which song and The Killers 'we've got soul but we're not soldiers' line. It was really cute. All through the show, lines would be changed a little to include a reference to 70.000 Belgians, or the previous gigs. Such a refreshing difference from bands who barely know where they're playing, who else is on, etc.

Anyway, it was spectacular end to what was already a brilliant day. Coldplay really are a class act.

Live updates and pics from Roskilde Festival

OK, loads of photos and updates are up! None of Chris yet. He arrived but went off to get dinner, lol. There's also an embedded clip of Will, Jonny and Guy playing a tune in their dressing room.

eta: Chris finally returns! And of course, he and Jonny are smiley and giggly.

eta: Another jam session. And this is gonna get real long and horrible for anyone on dial-up so I'll just stop editing, lol.

Joe Satriani hoping for a 'quiet ending' to Coldplay plagiarism case

Joe Satriani hopes that the pending copyright case with Coldplay will be settled "quietly behind closed doors," he claimed today via an online article in Australia's Sunday edition of the Herald Sun.

"It's one of those things that I am not really at liberty to discuss the juicy parts," he says, as the case makes its way through the US courts. "It's not really something that should have been public. It's a minor tiff between musicians that had we been in the same band it never would have made it out of the rehearsal room. But it's complicated by the fact that we are not in the same band. But neither Coldplay nor myself are comfortable discussing the details and we hope we can take care of it quietly behind closed doors."

The legal dispute remains unresolved since Satriani filed suit in December, although Coldplay members have hotly denied his contention. But Howard King, Satriani's lawyer, said Coldplay has hired a high-profile legal firm in California to handle the suit after it became clear that the group's appearance at the 2009 Grammys in Los Angeles could be marred by the embarrassment of having the legal documents served on them publicly.
