But come onnnn! Enough is enough. There's a line where you literally can not make any more new music. And they passed it a long time ago.

Brian Eno talks to Pitchfork about Coldplay

Any way you look at it, Brian Eno is one of the preeminent producers and thinkers of our time. Indeed, the once prolific Eno's own output has slowed considerably since the 1970s and 80s, in part due to these extracurriculars and of course thanks to his ongoing work with U2 and Coldplay. He spoke to Pitchfork online, in which he mentions his work with Coldplay on several occasions...

Pitchfork: In some way you bore the brunt of similar suspicion and ire when you agreed to work with Coldplay. It even forced people to miss that you made a good record together.

Brian Eno: Well, again, there are ways of playing it safe, and for me playing it safe would be to-- since I don't really need the money-- to work with only sort of critically respectable, obscure, experimental indie bands. Everyone would say, oh, that's fine. I would be that kind of producer who does that kind of thing. But when I met Coldplay and got to know them, I so much liked those people and I so think that they really want to do something. Again, it's like U2 were. They are hungry to do something else. And they will. I'm sure they'll turn out to be a great band.

Pitchfork: When you have a band like U2 or Coldplay, in theory they can do whatever they want. They're popular, they're wealthy, that should afford one complete freedom. But there are imposed limitations of stardom.

Brian Eno: Yes, though funnily enough that doesn't produce such a strong effect as you would think in the studio. What I think produces a strong effect is the feeling of not wanting to disappoint people. Because one thing you are aware of when you're very popular is how much stock people put in your work. You know that there are 11-year-olds who are saving up to buy your record. [laughs] Though that's probably not true anymore.

BBC America's online attack on 'uncreative' Coldplay

Last week, BBC America launched their own music section, Tunes From the Thames, and they've included several top 10 lists featuring the best of British pop music.

First thing they go and do? Launch a scathing attack on BBC's fellow coutrymen, Coldplay, whilst boringly comparing them with UK compatriots Radiohead. Never been done before, we're sure. Anyway, below is the article that will infuriate many Coldplay fans. Way to go, BBC America!

The most potentially controversial list is the Top 10 Current British Artists in the U.S. After much hand-wringing, Coldplay and Radiohead were selected as our top two biggest UK artists. In that order. But that begs the question: should the imitator (Coldplay) really triumph over the originator (Radiohead)?

An argument could be made for Radiohead as No. 1: their longevity, their continued critical success, their hugely popular U.S. tours, and their innovation both musically and economically. Who else could launch an album as a name-your-own-price download online - and still hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 for their full-price, in-stores release?

Coldplay, on the other hand, has built a career re-writing Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" and "Street Spirit (Fade Out)" as sappy indie ballads. Creatively, Coldplay completely fails to measure up to Radiohead. However, commercially, Chris Martin and the boys could be the most successful UK rock group since Duran Duran.
Still with the Radiohead comparions?! The two bands couldn't be more different. To borrow a British term, BBC America can piss off.

Weezer Cover Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" in New York City

Rivers Cuomo made Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" 'significantly nerdier' when Weezer covered it in New York City on Wednesday (Oct. 28) night, that is according to ChartAttack anyway. Here's what they had to say about the Coldplay cover performance:

According to Stereogum, Cuomo, clad in a geeky track suit, performed the Grammy Award-winning tune before the rest of Weezer joined him on stage for the show at the P.C. Richard & Song Theatre. Cuomo clearly isn't that familiar with the song, since he had a music stand with the lyrics to "Viva La Vida" set up in front of him, but he made sure to do a lot of hand-waving a la Chris Martin...

We aren't sure what Martin would think of Cuomo slapping his own butt to the beat, though. We're also not sure what's with the Tai Chi movements before the bridge of "waaaa-ooohhhhh ohhh ohhh"s at the end of the song, but anyway, it's still hilarious.

And this wasn’t just a simple acoustic cover… no, Cuomo brought along full classical accompaniment, further adding to the epicness of the performance. Violins and cellos were played, bells were rung, and Cuomo had the crowd “Woah”-ing with the best of them.

Not too shabby at all.

Interview with Nikki Rosetti, producer of Coldplay's Safety and Blue Room EPs

Coldplayzone recently published an interview online with Nikki Rosetti, the producer of Coldplay's first releases - Safety EP and The Blue Room EP. Artist, musician and painter, Nikki, told them about her history with the band with delight and a touch of nostalgia: "I told everyone, 'watch out for this band, they're going to be huge", she said. Here is the interview article below:

You’ve been the producer of the two Coldplay opening musical publications, that is Safety EP and The Blue Room EP. That was the moment of the band birth and baptism. And you were there. How did you meet Chris, Jon, Guy and Will?
We were recommended to the band by friends of theirs. Most of the bands who came to us, did so by word of mouth or from record labels developing bands.

So you set to work at once. Was it hard? Was there enough material to work on or was everything under definition?
The songs were all written, although I recall all the band members trying out keyboard parts or harmonies and so forth. We recorded the basic tracks pretty much live, then overdubs that worked, were added, but very few. Some keyboard parts, vocals and harmonies, maybe some guitar. Getting Jonny's guitar effects set up right took some time...

Just out of curiosity: who had the idea of placing microphones on the wet road in front of the recording studios to record “Easy to please”?
That I can't answer as I was not involved in that track!

Which is the best song you produced for Coldplay, according to you?
Difficult. If you listen to 'Safety', which is what most people are familiar with from our sessions, I would have to say 'Such A Rush'. However, as many people are aware, I was not happy with the amount of reverb swamping everything and subsequently re-mixed all the session tracks. They now sound like completely different songs, the sound is fatter, warmer and more intimate and Chris's voice sounds twenty times better than the original, having taken the reverb off (and it was was pretty good already!). From the re-mixes, I'd have to say my favourite is 'Panic', bits of which went on to become 'Don't Panic'.

Could you say something about Ken Nelson and Chris Allison, the other two producers at that time?
All the tracks we produced were in isolation at different studios, so I never met tKen and Chris. The two sessions we recorded, were done at our own studios, Sync City.

Is there any funny anecdote, any particular event or remarkable quote that characterized and distinguished the moments of the two produced-by-you EPs creation?
Well, the thing that always sticks out in my mind is Chris and his 'sorries'. Chris was a genuinely nice, well mannered, inoffensive guy as well as being a perfectionist. If he felt he hadn't sung a phrase particularly well, he would keep saying saying 'Sorry Nikki', and we'd stop take it again. After some hours I had to stop and tell Chris to stop apologising all the time. The tape is littered with 'sorry Nikki'. Perhaps that should have been the name of the e.p!

We think the material which you worked on was not huge, but anyway conspicuous. We know that certain tracks were discarded and that Chris wanted to record everything with the reverb effect. Shall we, one day, listen to those “whimpers” seen by many Coldplay fans as a “Holy Grail”?
I think this has been documented elsewhere, but here's the official track listing from our sessions:

Safety EP

1. High Speed
2. * Such A Rush
3. Ode To Deodorant
4. If All Else Fails
5. * Bigger Stronger
6. Panic
7. * No More Keeping My Feet On The Ground

There is one futher track, I believe completely unknown, so maybe a first for you. Right at the end of the session when we were winding down, Chris got me to do one more recording with just him, his acoustic guitar and vocal, called' Vitamins'. A very intimate recording and a great song, never heard by anyone I believe. I'm not so sure that even the band had a copy. The second session saw the whole time devoted to just two tracks, 'Brothers And Sisters' and another version of 'Ode To Deodorant' with a much harsher guitar part. 'Brothers and Sisters' opens with an Indian instrument with metal prongs like a music box, but played with the fingers. I forget the name of it, but I remember Chris not being amused when I kept referring to it as it a 'banjo'. Of course the three 'safety' tracks were included on subsequent releases, up to 'Yellow' which also has 'No More Keeping My Feet on The Ground' on it.

Now we ask you to answer sincerely: did you expect, after launching their music, that the “Fab 4” would become applauded, later famous and now among the most appreciated musicians in the whole world? How much of this prestige and charisma do you feel like belonging to you?
Well, if you were to ask anyone around the studios at the time, I never shut up about the band. I told everyone, 'watch out for this band, they're going to be huge'. I knew they were to be the band they are as soon as Chris started to sing and Jon started to play. How much can be attributed to me? Well, I think it would have been difficult for anyone to not come up with a good recording of this band, they were that good. Having said that, Phil Harvey the manager rang me during the recording of the 'Parachutes' album for EMI to say that they were almost out of time and could not get the sound they wanted. We seemed to have captured the sound of the band that they had in their heads. Phil asked if we could fit them in to finish the album in our studios. Well, they must have sorted out the problems because they completed the album where they were.

Do you have any regret about associated to that period?
None at all. That period saw us fortunate enough to record bands such as Coldplay and Keane and you can't ask for a better work day than that. We were one of the first fully digital studios from 1996 and bands loved it. it was all pretty new stuff this copy and paste, nudging the odd bass note or kick drum into place. And I have my own personal mixes of all the tracks to listen to!

Have you ever seen again the band in the last years? They must see you like a second “mum”…
Well, Jonny came back in with a band he was working with called 'The Betina Motive'. We recorded two sessions with them. I think he jammed in the studio with my partner Ron Niblett, a bass player. Outside of that, the band have move on to bigger and better things.Their second mum? Well I think I must be. They never write, they never phone...........!!

Coldplay's Oracle discusses the Exhibition Room entries

More questions answered by The Oracle...

November 6, 2009 - submitted by Sara, United States of America
Q. Hi Oracle! I'm curious to know if the daily Exhibition Room entry is selected from the current day's submissions, or from all the submissions sent in so far. Or what. Thanks.
The Oracle replies:
Apparently the Curator will choose from all submissions; given it will only display on weekdays yet you can still submit at weekends, that makes sense. Seems we have a competitive Curator; there's already gloating since over 600 entries in less than 24 hours beats the number of questions I receive.

Coldplay news round-up - Pet Shop Boys / Bee Gees / Linkin Park / A-Ha

The Pet Shop Boys are set to release a Christmas EP featuring a Coldplay cover, they have announced. The pop veterans played their version of "Viva La Vida" across this summer's festival circuit. It will feature alongside their take on "My Girl" by Madness, as part of the five-track collection. The tracklisting also features "It Doesn't Often Snow At Christmas", "All Over The World" and "Viva La Vida"/"Domino Dancing"/"My Girl" (Our House Mix). "Christmas" is out on December 14.

Meanwhile, in the final part of the Mirror's exclusive series with Barry and Robin Gibb to coincide with the release of The Ultimate Bee Gees CD and DVD, Barry has revealed that out of the current crop of musical talent, there are a few bands which excite Barry Gibb more than Coldplay, saying that he'd love to work with Chris Martin. "I love them," he says. "The kind of songs they write are very much like Bee Gees songs."

Over at the MTV Europe Music Awards, the Best World Stage Performance was won by Linkin Park, who triumphed over Coldplay and other acts, while Pixie Lott was pronounced the first ever MTV Push Artist. Both categories were added to this year's EMAs for the first time, recognising artists who have been championed by MTV.

Finally, Morten Harket of A-Ha has revealed in a magazine article that Chris Martin is not a 'sombre guy'. The article goes on to say: "This photo of me [below] with Coldplay's Jonny Buckland and Chris Martin was taken at the Brit Awards in 2006. I was asked to present the Best British Single award to them as a surprise. Chris has always been very vocal about his love for A-ha, which is great, and we get on really well. I first met Chris at a festival of arts in Barcelona, about eight years ago - it was when Coldplay were just bursting onto the scene with their album Parachutes. The band are at the top of their game now and it's interesting because they're going through a lot of the same things we went through in the '80s. We see each other regularly and there's a special bond between us, because not a lot of people can relate to what fame does to you. Suddenly everyone in the world wants a piece of you. Not being able to walk down the street without people pointing and talking about you as if you're not there can be strange.

I've discussed with Chris how people think that success generates self-confidence, but sometimes being the centre of attention can actually make you feel less confident and a bit isolated. Coldplay did 200 shows on their last tour and it can be a bit of a blur. You have to find a way of enjoying it again, and that's the same whether it's year one or year 25. It has been really fantastic to watch Coldplay go from strength to strength and I wish them all the best. Chris is very serious about his music, but he's not a sombre guy! He has a very humerous side, but he's just passionate about the things that matter to him. It's gratifying to see someone very talented make the most of it!

Watch Coldplay's Stripped performance

Good afternoon. You might remember that, back in July, Roadie #42 wrote about a Stripped acoustic session which Coldplay recorded in LA's Capitol Records building. Well, you can now watch the session on iheartradio's site by clicking here. And it's quite a treat.

The Oracle looks back on the early connections between Coldplay and Keane

More questions answered by The Oracle...

November 12, 2009 - submitted by Jesse, Australia
Q. Dear Oracle, I was just reading the Hopes and Fears deluxe edition booklet, and it says, "The same label had helped Coldplay by releasing their Brothers & Sisters single in 1999 (which meant Rice-Oxley was following in the footsteps of former University friend Chris Martin)." Does that mean that Chris and Tim aren't friends anymore?
The Oracle replies:
The 'former' is referring to the University not to be being friends. They do still bump into each other from time to time but aren't actually close friends as both are so busy with their bands. It's very hard to keep in touch with people when you're in a band; writing, recording and touring. Chris once phoned Danny MacNamara (Embrace) to ask if they were still friends as it had been so long since he'd had the chance to get in touch. (He said yes by the way). For anyone interested the label that released both Coldplay's and Keane's first outing was Fierce Panda.

Coldplay's Oracle spins the various live versions of Yellow...

More questions answered by The Oracle...

November 11, 2009 - submitted by Daniel, Australia
Q. I've noticed that the version of Yellow being played in the tour so far is faster than the album and previous live versions. Any reason for this change in tempo?
The Oracle replies:
As you can imagine when you have a song that you know you are going to be playing for the rest of your career it's good to take a different spin on it every tour. They did however ditch an acoustic version... If you look back to the Twisted Logic tour there was a completely different approach then too.

November 11, 2009 - submitted by JB, United Kingdom
Q. Hi Oracle hope all is well; I was thinking of trying to earn a few extra quid for good old crimbo....I have been considering busking which leads me to the following questions. 1. Did any of Coldplay ever busk either together or alone? 2. If so... Were they any good? and 3. How much did they make? JB BELFAST.
The Oracle replies:
Chris and Will did in fact busk together during their time at UCL and they humbly say that they weren't great and didn't actually earn much at all!

Pictures: Chris Martin opens the Kids Company Charity Auction (12th November 2009)

Internet sources reported on Chris Martin's attendance at the Kids Company charity designer fashion sale called 'Gladrags and Handbags' at the Music Room in London last night. Other pictures are after the jump also. As we reported recently, Coldplay have donated £1million to the South London charity Kids Company, which provides practical and emotional support to children who come from deprived families in the city.

The band's donation will help fund the opening of a new centre in Camden, a place where individuals searching for flats to rent in Camden might want to get involved with through volunteer work. A spokeswoman for Kids Company said: "Coldplay were inspired by the work they saw so decided to make this donation."

Kids Company, founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh, provides emotional and practical support to children from deprived families in the capital. Coldplay will help fund the opening of a new centre in Camden, plus they have offered to give free music lessons to the kids. Coldplay have, however, been trying to downplay their donation and didn't inform the press about their kind-hearted gesture or make any mention of it on their official website.

Roadie #42 - Blog #109: #42 is back, Back, BACK! And he's in the sudio...

I keep wanting to say "Happy New Year" every time I see people.

I can't speak for others, but six weeks off tour in the warmth of home, loved ones and general all round "real life" has felt like the holiday season. It hasn't helped that I saw my first "Christmas Shopping" adverts in mid-October this year.

Nobody else seems to be as chronologically confused as me, but everyone looks positively re-born. The thousand-yard-stares from a year and a half of touring have been replaced by grins, wisecracks and a crackling energy at being back together.

There's TV to do today - never anyone's favourite way of spending time - but it's in the name of getting the Latin American shows next year off to a flying start, so they're down to business. They're also back in their uniforms again for the cameras, which is quite remarkable for how it transforms things. Instantly, it feels like we're back at work and they're a band again.

I actually slept last night underneath the uniforms. I'm in the middle of re-locating to London and ended up spending the night on an air-bed under the clothes rails in the corner. I'm happy to report that despite press reports suggesting the contrary, they don't smell one bit like they've done a hundred and thirty odd shows. (Some odder than others, it must be said).

I'm hoping to move into my office at the new studio in the coming week. We had an email round some time ago from Moonie in management, to tell us that the new place had been christened. It is to be called "The Beehive". Will asks Phil Harvey whether he can take a look inside on his way home as he hasn't seen inside yet. Phil asks if he knows where it is.

"I know which street it's on, but not which one it is"

"It's....." Phil pauses to find the right words. "It's the skanky looking one".

I'd go along with that.

We venture up to there in the afternoon after the band have dispensed with their TV duties. Right now, it's a building site. It's covered in brick dust and it's echoing with power tools and hard graft. Soon, it will be ringing with the chaos of new ideas evolving.

Even though it's in a mess right now, the one thing that you can't help noticing as you wander amongst the rubble is how much light there is everywhere. Studios can very often feel like underground bunkers. Soundproofing is somewhat all or nothing and windows can often get trampled in the rush to keep the neighbours happy.

Not so here at the Beehive, though. Everywhere you go there's light streaming in. Even on a relatively gloomy British afternoon, it's noticeably bright inside. I can only imagine that this will be reflected in the new material.

Talking of new material, the studio whiteboards are positively exploding with plans, schemes and fragments of fresh ideas. In some places, when Chris has run out of white-board to write on, he's carried right on to the adjacent plaster. It's like the tour was an 18 month session of shaking up the fizzy drink bottle of the band's imagination - and now they're back in the studio, the lid has been unscrewed.

It is, quite literally, all over the walls....

R#42
They moved to a new studio! The Beehive. Ok, this changes things for the title of our OT thread.

Also, it seems the guys have some TV appearances to do for the Latin America tour. Hopefully it's stuff we get to see pretty soon!
