Keeley Hawes/Alex Drake (A2A) #10: 10 threads of epicness

Keeley Hawes (born 10 February 1976) is a British-English actress, known for many television roles, notably that of Zoe Reynolds in the BBC One drama series Spooks (2002-04).

Hawes first came into the public eye in the early 1990s, in 1990s Troublemakers and the 1992 BBC costume drama, The Moonstone. She has since appeared in many other television dramas, including Dennis Potter's Karaoke (BBC One/Channel 4, 1995), and Othello (ITV, 2001). She played the young Diana Dors in the ITV biopic Blonde Bombshell (1999) and Nicola Graham in the ITV drama After Thomas (2006). She is in her second series as DI Alex Drake in the BBC drama series Ashes to Ashes (2008-present), the sequel to Life on Mars, and is also currently the face of Boots No 7 cosmetics (2008).

Hawes is also known for voicing the video game character Lara Croft since the 2006 release of Tomb Raider: Legend. In 2008, she was nominated for a Spike Video Game Award for Best Performance By A Human Female.

"I think that it's pointless staying in a loveless marriage. I wasn't in a loveless marriage but if you're not happy, then that reflects - doesn't it? - on your children. Happy grown-ups make for happy children."

"I'm not self-conscious about my body, but I think I will keep it covered up after having three children. There comes a time when you have to say, 'Hmm, that's it, I think I'll save it for indoors."

(on what she clings on from childhood) "I think I've still got quite a childish sense of humour, and I'm quite giggly. I've been like that since I was quite little. I'm the worst for corpsing. I should make a mint in outtakes"

"We now think low-slung hipsters are very sexy but actually back then it was all about the waist. It took a while to get my head around the high waists – I was thinking, 'Gosh, this makes my bum look really long!"

Another interview from Daily Mirror

Quote:
Why are you involved in helping clean London up in time for the Olympics?

I know I’m not known for my sporting ability or for having anything to do with the Olympics but I am a Londoner as I’ve grown up here and live here, so it’s a nice thing to do for the city. And I’m also obsessed with cleaning! I love washing, hoovering, ironing, you name it. I find it very therapeutic.

You play Lady Agnes in Upstairs Downstairs, but could you have handled working downstairs?

Absolutely. Although I’m sure they had it much tougher than the cleaning I do - and obviously I would much rather be upstairs! But certainly in Upstairs Downstairs and shows like Downtown, which I haven’t seen, there seems to be a lovely sense of them being part of a little community. There’s something quite appealing about that. You have to make it work when you work and live so closely with people.

Do you have a dishwasher or do you dive in the sink?

I like to dive in the sink. Although actually it’s a bit of both because if you’ve had six people round for dinner, that’s when the dishwasher comes in handy! But I do like washing up; it’s quite satisfying. I remember my grandmother pulling up a chair for me to help her do the washing up and my daughter does that now.

Are you ever a secret slob?

I’m not really a slob. My most slobbish habit is probably throwing on tracksuit bottoms for the school run. I don’t go for all that kind of thing. So people probably think I’m a bit of a slob then.

So you don’t get glammed up for the school run then?

No! Oh my God. I can’t imagine that. I can’t understand why you’d do that, especially when you’re a model or actress and you have to do when you get to work anyway. There have been times in my life when I have felt like I can’t go out without my makeup on. But now I just put on some dark glasses so people can’t see if I look rough!

Baths or showers?

Baths. My husband (actor Matthew MacFadyen) likes the shower and I like a bath. I have one most nights. I was reading an article about the designer Tom Ford the other day and he was talking about having four baths a day! Maybe he can have four baths a day but he doesn’t have three kids. I can’t have four baths a day!

Will you have any more children?

I don’t think so. I think having three and working is enough, because I love working. If I had another one I’d feel too bad about spreading myself too thin. They’re all in full-time school now and it all works really well at the moment. Never say never but I think I’ve probably done my bit for the population!

Weekend run or Sunday roast?

Sunday roast definitely. My husband cooks an amazing roast. He’s a great cook so I would always choose a roast over a run. He’d do a run before he cooked it though. He’s done the marathon; he’s very sporty. But I get all the chat about his training so I I feel I do my bit!

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

Mint Aeros! Then it’s probably shopping. Handbags. Bad. Very bad. I just bought a really lovely YSL handbag, which is probably my biggest splurge recently. But then I’ll go and buy a skirt from Mango or Zara and you think actually it all balances out in the end.

How would you describe your style?

I become more and more classic as I get older. Now I’m a mother I can’t go round embarrassing them. Things that I might once have worn, I can’t wear now. They’re like, ‘You have to bring that skirt down mum!’ So it’s up at the top and down at the bottom!

Which period costumes have you enjoyed wearing the most?

I’ve loved this last series of Upstairs Downstairs. Our costume designer was amazing. I get more comments on my costumes for Agnes that than anything else. The fittings are great fun and finding shapes to suit you. You need a whole team of people to get dressed though so it’d be exhausting all the time.

How have you changed since becoming a mum?

I suppose I must have changed but I still feel about 17. It’s all about the kids now rather than me. But I had my first child Miles when I was 24 so having kids is all I can remember. It’s not like I always think, those were the good old days. I did have a lot of good old days! I love being a mum so it’s probably changed me for the better. It makes you less selfish and much more emotional!

You support CHASE Children’s Hospice, was that something you wanted to do after becoming a mum yourself?

I got involved after I went to a CHASE charity screening and I just love what they do. I organise days with the teenage girls where they have their makeup done and then their photos taken. It makes such a big difference. You think it’s going to be really upsetting but actually you walk out and you’ve had a really amazing day. I’ve just started supporting UNICEF too and I’m about to go on a trip to Africa with them.

Who would you most like to have round for dinner and why?

I’d quite like to have Will Ferrell round for dinner. I loved him at the Oscars when he went on with the cymbals to Brad and Ange. That made me laugh so much! Someone like him or Ben Stiller - or both of them. They’d be brilliant company. And Matthew would definitely be cooking – he’s a great cook.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Will Ferrell! You can’t answer that question without sounding full of yourself. And the thing is I probably see myself quite differently to how other people see me. Let’s just go mad and say Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt can play Matthew and all their kids play our kids as well!

AND THERE’S MORE…

- Keeley’s arms had kept her awake and were still throbbing because the jabs she’d had the day before for her upcoming trip to Africa.

- She’d stopped filming Upstairs Downstairs when we met but says she still texts her co-stars regularly.

- She didn’t want to reveal whether her husband wears Marigolds around the house as she says he’d never forgive her!

- Keeley has joined forces with P&G and the Mayor of London to host the P&G Capital Clean Up, a series of clean up events from March to June to help London get ready for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Get involved at: Home
