Yes, the ending was very bittersweet, especially because we don't know if Gene ever leaves his "duty" in limbo, and joins Alex and the others in heaven, or is bounded to keep helping other souls in purgatory forever.

TPTB said that Gene will eventually go back to TRA and meet up with Alex and the rest of the gang

They said it want the ending to be open ended, so the fans can make up their own mind what can happen..
