"One Week" - Movie Discussion & News

ONE WEEK

One Week chronicles the motorcycle trip of Ben Tyler as he rides from Toronto to Tofino, British Columbia. Ben stops at landmarks that are both iconic and idiosyncratic on his quest to find meaning in his life.

This movie is in production.

One of Canada’s best-known actors spent three days in Tofino this week shooting scenes for a film about cancer, denial and the meaning of life.

Joshua Jackson, known for his roles in TVs Dawson’s Creek and the 2006 movie Bobby, shot scenes for One Week on downtown streets, inside local coffee and surf shops, on the water and at Chesterman Beach.

“This is logically the end of the road,” said Nadia Tavazzani, the film’s associate producer. “This film is going to capture the most beautiful spots between Toronto and Tofino.”

Starring Jackson, One Week tells the story of a 20-something Toronto English teacher named Ben Tyler who is diagnosed with cancer and given a 10 per cent chance of survival.

Instead of beginning treatment, Tyler leaves Toronto on a cross-Canada motorcycle trip. He stops in Banff and ends up in Tofino.
Filming began in Toronto Sept. 10, before the crew drove across Canada with a tour bus, pickup truck, trailer and minivan.

“It really is a question of what does one do with their life,” said Jackson, when asked about the film’s meaning. “What does your life mean? It’s basically what the character asks.”

Tavazzani said the film’s crew of 18 arrived on the West Coast of Vancouver Island Monday night and began filming Tuesday. She said they’ll finish the Tofino segment today.

One scene shot Tuesday showed Tyler returning to a scene of his damaged Norton motorcycle after it was accidentally “run over” by a 1946 green Ford half-ton truck, driven by Tofino resident Peter Moffat.

Jackson said it wasn’t easy researching the role of a cancer patient. He said unless a person experiences the disease “it’s outside the ability of someone to understand. The best I can do is be as honest as possible.”

Meantime, locals said they were thrilled to be a part of the action. Wade Denesky, co-owner of Tuff Beans coffee shop, said he was first asked to let out his business this past summer. “I’d like to think it puts off a really good vibe.” Moffat said he was asked to participate Tuesday morning. “They were just looking for a truck and said, ‘come on down. I’m proud of this old truck. I love this old truck.”

Tavazzani said the crew will work in Tofino today, before heading back to Toronto for more filming. The film’s producers are Nicholas de Pencier, Jane Tattersall and Michael McGowan. (and Joshua Jackson *ahem*)

Wow...just wow!!! After seeing those photos and reading this, I'm really excited to see this movie. But since I just lost my best friend to cancer less then a year ago, I know I'll be bawling my eyes out before the opening credits even roll. But seeing him in a leather jacket on a bike with messy hair will make me feel sooooo much better.

I thought this picture was cute, he looks like he's had a long day.

Oh, I'm sure this film will affect many Josh fans here. We've all suffered through cancer stories -- and scares -- in our own right. My mum (so young) died of lung cancer only 2 years ago. This one's gonna be tough.

But on the other hand it's Great News! Yay! Our following Josh along on the production of this film makes my heart happy.

Hee! I that photo that you posted too, Janet! Classic Josh.

My dad died a few years ago to cancer, too. It's hard when he had a great deal of suffering, so I understand Josh's dilema on how to properly research all of this. It's an emotional process.

I think cancer pretty much has touched everyone's lives in one capacity or another, and I think that is probably what drew Josh to this story, it's "everyone's story" and everyone will be able to relate to it. Knowing Josh's acting capabilities in the angst realm, it could wind up being that break out role for him...if it gets the right backing, and maybe that is why he is also being part of helming it, he will get more say on how it will be developed! This project could be a direct correlation as to why he was reading the book "Breaking the Spell" that sounds like research to me...cause when you are slated to die, you begin to question the why's of everything around you...especially God!!

Good luck on this one Josh, it sounds like a very poignant story!

Pass me the tissues now, I started welling up reading 10 percent chance of survival. This film is not going to have a "and they all live happily ever after" ending.

But thats what makes it good. Crying is a cleansing of the soul... Plus seeing him on a bike riding through such beautiful country will totally make up for the sad stuff. Maybe they won't show if he dies or not. Maybe they just end it on how he copes with the diagnosis.

This movie looks awesome! I'm sure Josh will give a great performance, I only hope I'll be able to watch it in the big screen!

I know....it's going to be a real tear/jerker, but my money's on him carrying it off and pulling you in, to the depths of the real story, not the I'm dying of cancer part, but the, live life to the fullest, there are no guarentees for anyone, so enjoy your life everyday!

I'm so looking forward to the journey through Canada part (as well as Josh in leather on a motorbike), thats what the hubby wanted to do this summer (drive through Canada not 'do' Josh in leather on a motorbike ). Well actually he wanted to do the 'middle bit where no one ever goes' (as he put it) on some sort of pilgimmage to Neil Young!!!

Thats sounds like fun!! The doing Josh not the riding through nowhere..

I like how they did the traveling part first. They had to do it while the weather was still good. September is tricky, it can be really nice then all of a sudden winter is there.

Hooray for set pictures! *icons*

And I can't help but read about this movie and think of Ewan McGregor's bike trips. Obviously Josh should be hanging out with Ewan...for research. Yeah, research.
