Donna - Have you read 'Mother Tongue' or 'Troublesome Words' both by Bill Bryson? If you are interested in the history and peculiarities of the English language, these are the books for you.
I'm a huge Bill Bryson fan and I'm currently reading 'The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid' which is both funny and interesting.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone. I'm currently up in the office hiding from potential trick or treaters, I've shut the blinds downstairs and made sure there are no lights on!!!
No dressing up for me. I only stick on a costume during our 'book week' Last year I was an ugly sister, which I presume is the costume you remember Katie.

Hey everyone...I'm feeling just a little unsettled...I got the call a few hrs ago that my daughters college is in lock-down...someone shot a policeman and is on the loose in the two block area of her college, they shut down all the schools in the area...and she is stuck in a building she was in a meeting for, they are not allowed to leave and no one is allowed in...she has called me a couple of times but has to now reserve her cell phones energy for emergency use.

I feel like time is inching by... moment by moment...waiting to hear something...hoping that this whole awful scenerio ends with everyone safe...

I'm so grateful that the University seemed to get the situation under control and in lock-down pretty quick to keep all the students safe...The building she's in won't be that comfortable...but hopefully they all remain put and out of harms way...These are the times that being a parent is so stressful, and you have to just sit and wait it all out. If something doesn't get resolved, we may have to drive down to Philly, hopefully it won't be necessary. The news just broke in and said some of the grammer and high schools would be releasing the kids to their parents, I am so grateful that we get one philly station so I can at least hear the breaking news...

I pray all of this is over...soon...very soon.

KatieNap, I hope all is well with your daughter. It is such a helpless feeling when you are far from loved ones. I'm sure that all will be well.

Thanks to all of you for your Seattle and Vancouver suggestions. We did most of what was on your list and a bit more. We crammed a lot into our 10 days. It started out with excitement in the air...we had to abort the landing due to wind sheer, but on the fourth trip of circling the airport we had a very safe landing. I had never before experienced a round of applause for the pilot upon landing. It rained most of the time we were in Seattle, but it didn't deter us one bit.
In Vancouver we had nice days and walked our tootsies off. We even had one spring-like day. It didn't rain until Sunday and even then it was off and on light rain. We were out and about each and every day.
I got back home just in time for a wake up call from Mother Nature... a 5.6 earthquake. I had just turned on the computer to see what I had missed while vacationing (rotten cable at our hotels, so no show biz news) when the rumbling started. It is amazing how long thirty seconds can feel! That was our first one since the Loma Prieta quake in the late 80's.
I also came back to some wonderful news. I am looking forward to seeing Grey's Anatomy come January!
It is back to work tomorrow.

Just stopping back to give an update...

They have escorted all of the kids back to their dorms now and have cancelled classes for the rest of the day...and will get back to them about tomorrow...
They are still asked to keep put, with a lot of police and security on campus.

My daughter said that there were so many helicopters and news trucks, all around her campus. The school stays incontact with them by text messaging...how different the world is now.

her roommates and her were suppose to be going to a halloween party...
they were going as the characters from the "Clue" game..
I guess now they will just have to play "Clue"

Just wanted to stop in share my joy......I got a dwarf hamster today!

Yes, I know, I'm acting like an excited little kid....but I'm ok with that.

His name is Jackson (good name no? ) and he's white and gray. He's just the cutest little thing!

I had a hectic day from hell today, soo tired, but I can't make it through without my FF fix, lol, it's being very addictive. Children in the streets are asking for candies here too, we adopted that american tradition long ago! I remember when I was 17 and worked in a supermarket, they forced us to wear witches costumes, it was so annoying, I was sooo mad

Aw, a hamster how cute!!

We took our puppy trick-or-treating yesterday. She did very well with all the spooky goblins and crazy kids. It was really crowded but she handled it all with stride. I'll have to post another pic of her. She's only 5 months old and her back is just above my knee!!!!! So many people asked what kind of dog she was, I'd tell them and the same reply from everyone was..."A what?"

Awww, I'm glad you had a good time, maa! It sounds like you accomplished a lot, and I'm happy that you didn't let the weather deter you.

Katie, music is my passion, but sadly, my career doesn't involve music. The music industry is such a iffy business, that I don't think I could survive financially on its benefits.

However, I do what I can with my music passion and integrate it into my family and friends lives.

Hey guys....

Thanks Carolyn, Romina, and Miss Donna...just wanted to let you know that they lifted the lock-down and the kids are back in class...but the police officer did die this morning, and that is very sad.

But the college did a great job of doing all they could to protect the kids and I am grateful for that...My daughter is a country mouse...and she loves the city life, but along with the city life is the danger that can come with living in a big city!

and speaking of mouse's.... good luck Carolyn with your new hamster, they can definitely be a handful...we had three and one was the ruler of the cage...he would sit by the food and dare the others to come to eat... then one day one was taking a drink and he bit his foot off... There was always drama in that cage, until one day Amelia left the door open and they were gone and we never seen them again....

Mandy music in your life will be great when you raise your kids...I used music for everything....putting them to bed...riding in the car...we listened and sang all the time...and my kids today have a wonderful appreciation of all kinds of music!
