Noah
Noah Solloway is a writer and schoolteacher who is happily married to Helen. They live in Brooklyn with their four children and are beholden to Helen's wealthy father, a famous novelist, for their spacious brownstone. Noah's first novel was recently published to mixed reviews. He is vacationing with his family at his in-laws' estate in Montauk for the summer, where Noah hopes to write a more successful follow-up. The appearance of a beautiful young waitress is a tempting distraction and a serious threat to everything he has.

Helen
Helen Solloway is Noah's loving wife and the mother of their four children. A deft manager of their busy lives, she still loves her husband after all these years. While her father is a renowned novelist, that success has come at the expense of his family. Helen has high hopes for Noah's own writing career, but is wary of repeating the mistakes of her parents.

About the Series

At once deeply observed and intriguingly elusive, THE AFFAIR explores the emotional effects of an extramarital relationship. Noah is a New York City schoolteacher and novelist who is happily married, but resents his dependence on his wealthy father-in-law. Alison is a young waitress trying to piece her life and marriage back together in the wake of a tragedy. Set in Montauk at the end of Long Island, the provocative drama unfolds separately from both the male and female perspectives, using the distinct memory biases of both to tell the story.

Am I getting forgetful or what? Who is Harry? What does he do - I can't remember him.

He's the book editor with the glasses that talks to Noah.

Of course. I thought I had missed something there. It is about midnight here so I hope it is only tiredness, but then he has not got a very memorable face.:)

He's only been in two episodes too and just so you know I had to look him up on IMDB because I couldn't remember either.

Well that's him sorted. He looks different in his picture than on TV, it must be the glasses.

There is a place on IMDB where Users can post their reviews, so I posted my review. I thought I would share it with you guys here. It takes a few days for it to appear on IMDB.

Quote:

This is typically not the type of show that I would normally be drawn to; however, the concept of the different POV's intrigued me. I find the detail and simple ways in which they show the differences in the POV's to be brilliant and tells a lot about the viewpoints of the sexes. After watching the first four episodes, I find Noah's character to be very unlikeable and am still trying to figure out if that is intentional or not and I find any attraction to him by Alison to be a little hard to believe; however, she is a very damaged person, so perhaps she is just not seeing clearly enough to fairly judge her surroundings.

The Affair is taking a back seat as far as what is interesting me and my circle of friends who seem to be discussing the plot almost daily or whenever a new article or Tweet surfaces. Our discussions are mainly about the information brought up in the interrogation room and the speculation of who the victim is and the "who done it" plot. Another big discussion topic is what is the illegal business that the Lockharts are involved in.

We also find ourselves discussing the Lockharts more often and wishing they were the main focus of the show as opposed to the affair. Because of this, episode 4 was a tough watch as it was all about the two leads which we understand had to happen, but are now glad that is over and we can get on with the rest of the story. We are also agreeing with all the comments out there about "why would anyone cheat on Joshua Jackson" as I mentioned earlier that Noah is an unlikeable character which makes me(us) wish Josh had more of a leading role.

Overall, I am completely invested in the storyline at this point and look forward to the mysteries being revealed. I will continue to watch and am looking forward to future seasons.

Justyne,
That review was beautifully written. You make a forum proud! Besides the fact that I agree with everything you said, its weirdly satisfying to have been represented so well.

I must admit that this is the first time I have ever joined in with a forum like this. It really does challenge my intellectual curiousity and offers a welcome refuge (with nice people) from the "alternative universe" in which I physically live!

Thanks for your leadership, insightfulness and companionship!

Well a great big thank you. It is a first time for me too. The only other time I even remotely came close was immediately following the Fringe Finale. I was so invested in the show I googled somewhere to read comments and found somewhere (don't even know where) to read and partake in the post finale chatter. I was on for about an hour cause I needed to get it all out. Then I didn't do anything until joining :ff:

I am so glad you like my review and that it is a reflection of what others here feel. I didn't want to specifically mention :ff: because my opinions may not reflect everyone's, but at the same time I wanted them to know that mine wasn't a singular opinion.

And thank you for your kind words about my leadership as your Moderator.

@Das_ProfX @ReelTalker @dogmagayle about The Affair: Do you think Noah's version of events is his novel and not how things really happened?

As much as I'm enjoying the writing and performances in #TheAffair, I'm getting a bit tired of the point of view storytelling.

#TheAffair if having an affair is as boring as this show my husband has nothing to worry about ever. GO SOMEWHERE W THE STORY ALREADY

Great review Justyne - you represented the points of view that most of us share, very well.

Great review! Liked it. I agree about the Lockhart. Hope they will play a very important part in this whole story. I just don't know what to think about Cole yet. Can't wait to see the second part of the season to find out and see if Noah is really that bad person and Cole that good guy.

Thanks

I too am curious about the roles of Noah and Cole and which direction each is going to take. I feel like Noah is going to end up doing something stupid, but I'm not sure how serious this stupid thing is or if I'm way off track. Cole continues to be a mystery and I want him to be a good guy, at least in his heart I want him to be good, even if he is involved in questionable or illegal activities.

And Alison just needs to get fixed as she is so damaged. I like that Helen is a strong individual and I love how she stands up to her parents, but at the same time she gets it that they have money and it's okay to accept it from them. Afterall, it's not like she is this lazy person sitting back letting her parents take care of her, she is a professional women with her own business who happens to have four kids. I actually like Helen more than I like Alison.

I haven't made up my mind about Oscar yet. He seems like a bit of a dick, but I also think he has some true feelings for Alison or a fondness and he masks that by being a dick. However, I could be totally off base there as well.

Can't wait for the next chapter of the story to be revealed.

lighttower 11-07-2014 06:24 AM

The thing to remember is that we might never get told what actually is the truth. It's a show about perceptions. How they remember and how they want things to be perceived in their storytelling.

So, although we will get more Cole and Helen in the back half of the season, it is still being told from Noah and Alison's POV. How Alison portrays Cole, going forward, may still be through her grief stricken filter. Her perceptions may not be totally true and I don't know whether she's trying to skew things for the detective either.

I also think Oscar is not that dick as he seems. In episode three i felt his genuine affection towards Alison behind his stupid comments, and apparently she knows that. You could feel intimidated by his phisical appearance but if i had to compare him and Cole i would say that Cole might end up beeing more dangerous and threatening.
