True Blood Comic Book Discussion #1

Quote:
True Blood #1
Written by Alan Ball, David Tischman & Mariah Huehner, art by David Messina, covers by J. Scott Campbell, Joe Corroney, Andrew Currie, David Messina.

Alan Ball's hit HBO series, the sensually sizzling story of the lives and loves of vampires, mind readers, and all manner of creatures, comes to IDW!

Blood and sex mix on a hot rainy night at Merlotte's, when Sookie and her friends are trapped by a vengeful spirit who feeds on shame. People die and dirty secrets are revealed as Sookie, Bill, Eric, Sam, Tara, Jason, and Lafayette and are all coerced to dig deep and tell painful memories from their past--those things we all have locked within us that we never tell another living soul! Bon Temps, Louisiana has never been stranger, or more twisted, in a story co-plotted by TRUE BLOOD series creator Alan Ball, with a script by David Tischman (Bite Club) and Mariah Huehner, and lush art by David Messina (Star Trek: Countdown). First Issue special: an exclusive pullout gatefold poster by David Messina!

32 pages, $3.99.
Coming in July

Bloody merchandising machine. Now I expect we'll be expected to accept this as canon and obligated to buy it? Every franchise is pulling this trick nowadays, it seems. Well, count me out. If it's on the screen it's canon and if it's not on the screen it's not canon. Same for Buffy, Star Trek and whatever else.

Dumb art.

Not so sure about the cover art.

But I like the idea.

Thanks for starting the thread.

BTW, you forgot the 'e' in True.

Me neither. They all look really weird.

Here is an example of the interior artist's work

Not a lot of depth in that art. Rather weak. Like all too much comic art these days.

Thanks for starting the thread, Maxx

Not quite sure about the cover art, especially when it comes to Sookie But then again, I'm not a comic fan, so I may be not the best judge when it comes to comic art.

I know we'll probably agree to disagree on this, but canon is still what's written in the books to me. Of course there's also the TV show and the comics, but if the comics are based on the show, the show will stay canon to me, no matter what they do on the comics. On that note, no one is forced to buy them, so everyone can stick to the canon they like/prefer.

I still like the idea about the comics, think they can be interesting.

But since I know next to nothing about comics I can't say anything about quality or things like that.

The cover artist is a fairly well known superhero artist and I'm sure they are having him do it to catch people at the store that like his art work hoping to rope them into the series.
I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they have a special cover artist & a photo cover variant for issues.

That's what's canon for the books. But what about what's canon for the tv show? The tv show is separate from the books, with differences in story and characters, and as such it has its own canon.

If they call the comics canon, anybody who doesn't read them will be missing part of what's considered the official story. That's as close as they can get to forcing people to buy them. In effect, they'll be telling you to buy them and twisting your arm over it.

You mean they expect people to buy it just for the cover? Like the collectors who buy multiple covers? I wonder where all these people get all this money they squander so lightly while people are starving elsewhere in the world.

So who's the cover artist?

Eh, not a fan of the cover designs. Sookie looks nothing like Sookie...but I'll probably check it out
