Fringe - "The Pattern" of Fringing (Discussion) #1

There's a word I've given to the hobby of looking for clues and attempting to "find the pattern". It's called fringing. The original website that posted the apple core, seahorse, etc. now has a video clip that resembles a news story of mysterious sheep patterns.

If you come up with anything in your fringing that adds to a deeper understanding of what's really going on, share it here!

I don't believe so. This is really just creative viral marketing for the show.

We've been (or should I say Donna, calzo, etc.) discussing this in great detail over at the Josh Jackson board and I have to say, the girls are getting really nitty gritty!

Oh boy. Where do I start? Amy, Alex? Gonna need some help!

Okay I may have to do this piecemeal, but I'll try my best this go-round. The early promos offered us still pictures with a series of Braille dots underneath, which represent certain specific numbers, which I will expound on a bit later. The symbols were:

A leaf with a noticeable triangle inside it, and the number 5 highlighted in Braille. The triangle is Delta, the 4th letter of the Greek alphabet and in math notation designates change, or difference. (Amy discovered that in biology Delta also refers to gene mutation)

Next is a six-fingered hand, an obvious reflection of genetic mutation. Its highlighted number is 8.

The third symbol is the inside of an apple showing human fetuses where the pits would normally be. Notice how the natural curve of the apple is reflected in what is known as The Fibonacci Spiral (more on that below). That is found with Braille number 13.

The 4th symbol is a frog with the decipherable Greek letter Phi on its back. Phi is the 21st letter of the Greek alphabet and is also known in Math circles as "The Golden Ratio". No surprise here -- the number highlighted in Braille underneath the frog is 21.

The 5th symbol is a daisy, with one of its petals an obvious insect wing. The Braille number with it is 34.

The next is a butterfly. When scrolling over its wings, bony hands appear. Above the butterfly, Amy learned is the Seed of Life symbol, the full symbol has 6 circles representing the 6 different days of Creation. The Braille number with the butterfly is 55.

The 7th symbol is a seahorse showing its curved tail in a Fibonacci Spiral. The squares drawn in its torso show how the Fibonacci Spiral is created by joining the corners of smaller and smaller squares by arcs. The Fibonacci Spiral is a naturally occurring phenomenon. You'll see it in sea shells, spiralling galaxies like our Milky Way, and... seahorse tails! Next to the seahorse are (thanks again to Amy) two chemical chains of amino acids, but in unstable forms, mutated, if you will. Highlighted is the number 89.

The 8th and most recently divulged symbol is what appears to be a ram's horn, another example of the natually-occurring Fibonacci Spiral. On the horn you will see a series of numbers. This is the "Golden Ratio", also known as Phi! (see symbol #5 with the frog). It begins 1.618...

Each of the numbers underneath the symbols refers to a number in The Fibonacci Sequence (FS), BTW. The FS is a series of numbers whereby any of its numbers in the sequence is the sum of the two preceding numbers. The sequence starts: 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 55 89 144, the next is 233 and on and on. So, 5 for example is the sum of 2 and 3, which are the two preceding numbers. Every 3rd number is even. You would think the sequence appears to go on to infinity, but Johannes Kepler concluded that the limit of consecutive numbers approaches the golden ratio (which Amy identified earlier as 1.618). The show began representing the symbols mid-sequence, starting with 5, just to throw us off a little I suppose.

That's enough for now. There's a whole lot more that I've left out, but this is the Reader's Digest version to get you all started -- and hooked! Alex has also made several major points and discoveries, but I will have to address them in another post, or she can add to the thread. Gotta get ready for dinner. Enjoy!

Golden Ratio I think it's really interesting how this works into the show. Any Numb3rs fans here? God, I'm a geek and grateful I watch that show because there was an episode where they talked about the The Fibonacci Sequence also connected with the Golden Ratio.

Essentially, as demonstrated above, it is a sequence/pattern found in all things throughout our planet and universe. Leave it to good old Wiki to help detail the significance of it:

I think Zeising is someone to definitely look into where these patterns are concerned. I believe what the pattern is telling us with these hints of the palm-print to seahorse is that humans are evolving to the conditions of our environment either by forced/unforced genetic mutations.

I think the "pattern" is in the numbers and this "golden ratio"/pattern.
As noted above, this pattern could lead to clues, clues that will directly lead towards the individuals who are pulling the major strings.

The reason I thought the video might have been referring to a real-life event was that I seem to remember the sheep doing weird things some time ago. Or maybe my brain is just playing tricks on me

What I thought was totally hilarious was that the line when he was explaining where The Fibonacci Sequence was found: "it's found in the structure of crystals, spiralling galaxies, in a nautilus shell", that's exactly the same explanation that I found word for word on Wikipedia!!!

What I think will be interesting is just looking further into this aspect of Fringe science, as it's coined in the series.

God, this is hard to talk here without giving too much away, so I'll stick to the topic of Fringe Science/Patterns and theories for the moment.

All I will say is that the pilot episode sets off the rest of the season, and in JJ Abrams fashion - as he did with Lost - expect to look into the details.

Am i the only one who isn't the LEAST bit curious if they did something interesting with the palm lines? As in palmistry? Now, I know that it's in theory but I'm curious if there's not something there too...as far as the head line, life line, etc. Now I went through my "phase" back in high school where I really was into that stuf...still am from time to time.

I find it interesting that the head line - which usually deals with logic - is forked and has vertical lines binding it with the heart line. It kind of suggests the person has a bit of a duality, hard time seprating emotion from logic?

And the lower base has a lot of travel lines as well. I know this sounds absurd to some but I find it odd that the lines are soo deep and prominent in the shot when it didn't have to be in the first place.

DNA CHATTER

Something I hope the show will touch briefly is the recent news about "junk DNA" which in short is the sequence of genomes within our DNA that is unknown. Some people call it "junk" but simply because we don't understand it doesn't mean it's without a purpose.
