Lance Reddick/Phillip Broyles #9: His determination to find the answers is what makes him a great agent.

That was the original objection.

However, to understand how this ending may have come about, you have to know a little history of the series.

"St. Elsewhere" ran for six seasons on NBC (1982 - 1988).

Like "Fringe" at the end of S4, the producers thought that the series was going to get cancelled at the end of S5, so they filmed and NBC aired a more conventional episode that could substitute for a final.

Called "Last Dance at the Wrecker's Ball", the entire hospital staff learns that their jobs are going to be terminated and the hospital closed and demolished.

Then NBC decides at the last minute to renew "St. Elsewhere" for a sixth season.

So when NBC cancelled the series for real a year later, the producers had already ran a 'final' episode a year earlier. I think they were pressed to come up with an off the wall way to end the series 'again' as not to repeat themselves - thus the whole series was dreamt up by an autistic boy concept was born.

Here is a real interesting article on what the cast thought of that ending:

I still think they could have come up with something better. Heck - they could burn the building down or have it bought out by a big corporate health company. There are any number of other, more realistic things they could have done.

It was bought out by a big corporate health company at the beginning of S6 - after the S5 'final'.

re: Lance Reddick laughs

From the look on Anna's face, it was an odd occurrence, even off screen.
