It may be purely career based. He may think he has a better chance to get work, or he may prefer the US film industry over Australia's. It could also be that he's been here so long he feels more at home in the US and doesn't want to uproot himself.

I think it was Simon Baker (The Mentalist) who said in an interview that they watch a lot of American television in Australia, so he grew up imitating the accent. That's probably true of a lot of Australians, so it may not be that difficult for them to get roles. Plus, while Sydney to New York is about a 24 hour flight, Sydney to Los Angeles is only about 13 hours - much more doable.
