Sounds like an excellent binge opportunity for a holiday weekend!

Very true. These days like so many things, television is ruled by profits. Until tv producers and network heads are sure they can do it without losing money, we're not likely to see that sort of diversity except very rarely.

The good news is there are some examples of openly queer characters even on broadcast network television. Thirty or 40 years ago there were virtually none on television of any kind. As little as 20 years ago queer characters were still rare and typically they were marginal supporting characters or their sexuality was revealed late in the series or character's run - in other words, once they were revealed, they exited or were killed off. Several shows had bisexual characters that were essentially a cop-out. The character might express interest in the same sex, but be solidly entrenched in a hetero romance, thus allowing the show to say they have a queer character without actually having any queer relationships or interactions on the show.

Although i agree with you, i must mention that there were a few exceptions. The Golden Girls in the '80's, Absolutely Fabulous in the '90's and Queer As Folk in the '00's.
