 I tried something new with my digital art, and I sort of feel like I’m cheating bc I’m using the photo as my base layer and coloring over it, but it’s also teaching me a lot about light and color. And how to use the “watercolor” brush in the proper way. It’s fun and interesting, and it does have a level of difficulty to it so maybe it’s not cheating? Also, I kind of started this because I wanted to color her eyes bc they're fascinating, but then I just ended up doing her whole face lol |

That's great! Everyone has to start somewhere - and what you're doing sounds a little bit like the art version of fan fiction. We fanfic writers take existing characters and and existing premise and write "on top of" it, so to speak. We certainly don't consider that cheating!
