Judging by the rate of commercials today, it appears that part of the experiment didn't work.

Classic Fringe #1: A Historical Perspective

From May 13, 2009: An Entertainment Weekly review of “There’s More Than One of Everything.”

'Fringe' season finale blows minds: 'We're trying to plug a hole in the universe; what are YOU doing here?'

https://ew.com/article/2009/05/13/fringe-season-f/

I thought using the Twin Towers as the iconic symbol of the alternate universe to be a gutsy, bold, innovative approach.

I only hope that the 9/11 victims' families and friends took the use of the Twin Towers in the alternate universe on "Fringe" in its proper context.

There have been whole articles written about how various shows dealt with the aftermath of 9/11 - especially those based in New York or where an NY skyline figures prominently. A couple of shows notably use 9/11 as a significant element in their backstory - Blue Bloods, CSI:NY and Rescue Me all deal with first responders and their families in the years after the tragedy. Fringe certainly puts an interesting twist on it by making the towers one of the key ways that viewers know which universe is which. I do wonder if some survivors maybe found it impossible to watch purely because of that.

I think they did too. In a way, "Fringe" paid homage to the many victims of 9/11 in New York City by not having the Twin Towers invovled in the terrorist attacks.

However, in my opinion it would have been more interesting if it had been written that the 9/11 attacks hadn't happened at all.
