Fanfic is a big part of how I got involved in online fandoms. I love that good fanfic provides such a great extension to the canon story and allows me to enjoy so many more stories than a weekly show typically provides. PLUS, if you're interested in something that departs from canon - chances are there's a fanfic writer or two with the same interest that can fulfill the fantasy.
