Science Fiction - whether it's in print or on screen - has always had a reputation for being lesser quality. It really got bad in the 50s and 60s when a LOT of "B" movies were low-budget sci-fi films - think I Married a Monster from Outer Space or The 50-foot Woman. TV sci-fi was equally cheesy. In the 70s and 80s sci-fi films became high-budget, but they were known for fabulous special effects and most critics couldn't see past those. In the same way that actors can often get type-cast, sci-fi is also type-cast. It will continue to get awards for effects and the occasional award for sets or music, but most critics as well as the industry folks who vote for awards don't consider it to be "serious" enough for the directing, acting or best picture / best drama sort of awards.
