INTERVIEW: Robert Pattinson Talks To Direct Matin
Direct Matin interviewed Robert Pattinson at Cannes where amongst other things he revealed he has seen the trailer for his movie 'Life'.

Quote:
Translation

Teenage icon at the beginning of his career, Robert Pattinson settled permanently in the Hollywood landscape. In "The Rover " by David Michôd , he interprets a simple guy forced to collaborate with the enemy to find his brother in the Australian desert. It's a controlled turn that the British actor admits was made possible thanks to his encounter with David Cronenberg.

Was it the universe of "The Rover" or your character that first sparked your interest?

I found the script very interesting, but first I had a very strong connection with my character, especially with his way of expressing himself. I had never seen such a character.

Was he was difficult to interpret this simple-minded guy ?

No, it came to me naturally (laughs ) I approached like a street dog that gets thrashed and yet keeps coming back to his master for a little affection.

The film imagines a world devastated by the madness of men . Do you think this is the direction in which our society is heading ?

It could happen but I am more optimistic than that. I have more faith in humanity . In "The Rover ," men are not completely lost, they are not all gone mad . Some still have hope and try to revive the earth. Yet this economic collapse is entirely feasible .

You play one after the other anti- system films, " Maps to the Stars " and "The Rover" , are you politically active ?

I 'm more or less liberal. It's hard to be an actor and not be liberal elsewhere. Perhaps we should more preoccupied with the oceans. But I don't really take politics seriously . When we see that most Western countries are under the leadership of a handful of multinational corporations, I feel that voting is a joke .

Teen sex symbol to actor sought by the greatest directors , what is the secret of your conversion?

It took me some time . This is 4-5 years I'm trying to build relationships with directors whose work I like and it turns out that things settled at the same time. " Cosmopolis " changed everything. Since my meeting with David Cronenberg, my career took a new turn.

You were in Cannes with two films, " The Rover " and " Maps to the Stars " by David Cronenberg .

This is one of the most exciting places to screen a film. There's an incredible energy . I love the press in Cannes. Journalists are really interested in movies and don't ask questions like "What is your favorite food ? " In France , journalists love cinema .

You have completed the film by Werner Herzog about the spy Gertrude Bell, " Queen of the Desert ." What is your character?

I play young Lawrence of Arabia . HEwas a very close friend of Gertrude Bell during the First World War.

You also play as photographer Dennis Stock in " Life " by Anton Corbijn .

Filming has just been completed . I just saw the trailer the other day. I play a man who photographed James Dean right before he became famous . James was an unknown at this time .

What are your other projects?

In November , I will work with Oliver Assayas on a film called " Idol 's Eye ." It is a gangster film , the true story of a group of thieves who rob the shop of a pawnbroker held by the mafia. It happens in the late 1970s. Olivier Assayas & I met two and a half years but the project only became reality there a few months ago.

The Rover star Robert Pattinson says he lacks the confidence to play a conventional leading man

DON’T expect to see a newly-buff Robert Pattinson in a superhero movie any time soon.

“It’s not really about the physicality,’’ said the former Twilight heart-throb today ahead of the red carpet premiere of dystopian Outback thriller The Rover at the Sydney Film Festival on Saturday night.

“Those leading guy roles are all extremely confident characters and I am just not that confident. I would feel weird faking that confidence.

“The action guy who does the little quip at the end of killing somebody? I would sound like a psycho.”

Pattinson said he and co-star Guy Pearce, with whose character he forms an uneasy alliance in The Rover, had compared notes.

“We’re not really considered for those normal leading man roles — well, maybe I was for a little period after Twilight. I guess I gravitate towards niche things but also those are the things I get offered.”

promo Rob! Loved those yellow pants too!
Watched some video interviews and saw lots of the photocall
pics from Sydney!
Thanks for the interviews and TFTNT!
He could play a superhero (he could/can do anything) but he just
likes his indies and working with great directors and people he finds
who love the art of film-making, just like he does.

"He Has A Really Beguiling Physical Energy, Clearly Smart" - David Michod Talks About Robert Pattinson

From HeraldSun

Quote:
I hadn’t seen the Twilight movies but friends of mine had said he (Pattinson) was an interesting guy,” Michod said in Adelaide.

Pattinson, who gives a standout performance, hates auditioning but Michod used the process to explore the character of the wounded man who Eric (Guy Pearce) kidnaps in the movie.

“I put him through four hours of what he would call hell and I used three hours and 55 minutes to explore the character with him,” says *Michod. “He has a really beguiling physical energy, clearly smart, and he was actively seeking out directors whose work he liked.”

The resulting film, shot entirely on location in South Australia, particularly around the northern outback towns of Leigh Creek and Maree, won strong reviews when shown at the Cannes Film Festival.

From Daily Telegraph (Australia)

HIS days as a bloodsucker are long behind him but try telling that to the hundreds that swamped The State Theatre last night to catch a glimpse of their favourite vamp Robert Pattinson.

Back in town to unveil his new Aussie flick The Rover — a film miles from his turn as Edward Cullen in the Twilight series — the British thespian spent around 30 minutes greeting fans and signing autographs along Market Street of which a lane of traffic was barricaded for the event.

Such was the hysteria, even The Rover’s director, Sydneysider David Michod, admitted he sympathised for his leading man who — even three years after the last Twilight film wrapped — cannot shake the adulation.

“All the time ... I feel for him all the time,” Michod said on last night’s red carpet.

“It’s kind of nuts the bubble that he has to live inside.

“There are kind of very few people in the world who can inspire that sort of bizarre ‘Beatlemania’ and it was one of the extraordinary experiences of working with him out in the desert. It was so freeing for him.

“To be able to sit out in the street with him at the end of the day and drink a beer.

“It was quite amazing.”

Judging by his post-Twilight body of work it’s clear Pattinson is doing his best to distance himself from his star-making role.

In The Rover, a futuristic thriller set in the Aussie outback, Pattinson plays a slow-witted crim opposite Guy Pearce who also starred in Michod’s last major film Animal Kingdom.

The Rover has earned Pattinson rave reviews while for Michod, the film has been a springboard into his next project — writing and directing Brad Pitt’s next big film The Operators.

blue suit! I him in blue!
Just watched the JK interview-Rob was hilarious! No Jimmy, you can't
really believe a word he says but he's so cute, you don't care!
His parents kicked him out. Secret key. Storage place. Heavy saliva.

And my fave "It's brokeback mountain 2 and that's our first date"
