In 2005 Edward Cullen met Isabella Swan, it was something different about her from the beginning. Her blood came to him like a speeding bullet, it was the best smell ever and he just wanted a taste but since it was a full classroom he went against it not wanting to expose his family. Edward went away for a little because of his blood lust towards this teenager but he returned to start up a conversation and get to know her more. Edward couldn't understand it - he couldn't read her mind and that was a first but it's also what made him fall deeply in love with this mystery. Bella fell inlove with Edward too, she always felt a attraction towards him but she thought he didn't like her.

They fell inlove dispite all the odds that were stacked against them. Edward admits that he feels very protective over her, he feels it's his duty to protect her against any harm that my come her way. Bella safety is number one to Edward. He watches her when she sleep and Bella knows it but doesn't mind it, she actually feels safe with him around.

On Bella's 18th birthday. Bella is especially upset because it is the day that she becomes older, physically, than Edward, who will always be 17 so she is desperate to become a vampire. Bella receives a paper cut while opening one of her gifts, drawing a single drop of blood and causing Jasper, to try to attack her. Edward, in the process of defending Bella from Jasper, throws her into a table filled with crystal, which results in Bella getting a deep cut from her wrist to her elbow. Although Bella's injuries are not life-threatening, In a misguided attempt to protect Bella, he convinces her that he does not want her anymore (though he still loves her).

Bella's deep depression last for months but soon she begins hearing Edward's voice inside her head, warning her to turn around. Bella soon realizes that whenever she puts herself in a dangerous situation, she can hear Edward's voice with perfect clarity so Bella keeps doing anything just to hear his voice. Not caring of the danger she puts herself in. To hear Edward's voice again, Bella attempts cliff-diving and nearly drowns. When Alice, who has the power to see the future, sees Bella jump, she believes Bella had committed suicide and subsequently returns to Forks. Edward, isolated from his family by his own volition, is told by Rosalie, that Bella is dead.

Although Edward lived as a vampire without romantic love for nearly a century before meeting Bella, he finds it difficult to live without her, becoming severely depressed at the prospect of an infinitely long and meaningless life. Edward attempts to convince a group of powerful Italian vampires, The Volturi, to kill him [Edward still thinks Bella is dead so he doesn't want to live.], by explaining that he broke one of the most important vampire laws. Telling a human (Bella) about the Vampire world. Together with his sister Alice, Bella rushes to Italy and stops Edward before the Volturi can destroy him. Bella meets the Volturi, and Edward and Alice find out that Bella is immune to other vampires' powers as well as theirs. After he and Bella return from Italy, Edward explains why he left and apologizes to Bella.
