The NE research is part of an application for a national research grant for a project on television, audiences and the post-broadcast era. I'm hoping it will come out in 12-18 months since it needs to be part of the grant-funded research. I know I gave that timeline before, but the with the film still being unconfirmed either way, delays in getting interview transcripts approved by the participant, my own real life getting in the way and the need to do work that pays a wage, I have not been able to work on it as quickly as I would have liked. I am sorry for the delays.

On Mini/Franky stuff, there is much I can't go into until the end of S6, but:

The people I interviewed stated categorically that Mini and Franky were neither conceived nor written as potential lovers, and certainly not as lesbians. The bond was always about something else. The interviews deal with what that was about, and why it wasn't something that developed into a sexual relationship. But to say, for instance, that JB (or anyone else) set up Minky and now it's been destroyed by other people, is simply not backed up by the facts. The key people who had the most involvement in the creation/development of Mini and Franky in S5 are still working with those characters in S6.

The creative team emphasised in our conversations that although they care passionately about how the show goes down with fans, they follow what they see as the truth of characters. They want the storylines for this series to be epic, and the episodes will deal with issues, emotions and events that have an epic dimension to them. S5 dealt with things in miniature as each individual was grappling with some aspect of themselves. But already, ep 1 has dealt with bigger things with sweeping repercussions--perhaps the most mature and momentous that any generation has dealt with. Other characters have had massive issues, but for the most part, they were handled in terms of how the issues affected that person's life. Delving into these darker themes isn't everyone's cup of tea, but that's a matter of personal taste.

There are gaps in storylines, but it's not always the fault of writers. Scenes can be written and even filmed, and still fail to make the final edit because things get cut to suit time constraints. There were gaps in ep 1, but there were also gaps in 'Minky' development, one of the biggest being how Mini and Franky got to be friends after being so antagonistic to each other in the first place. Fans filled in that gap in various ways, one of which involved attributing it to Mini's romantic attraction. Sometimes of course, it's a writing technique to leave things unanswered for a few episodes and then allow storyline development to clear stuff up. Whether that happens to resolve things that people have been talking about regarding episode 1 remains to be seen.

How many times has anyone read an extensive interview with Sean Buckley, Georgia Lester, Jess Brittain, or Neil Duncan? How many times has anyone read an interview with Freya or Dakota that isn't limited by their inability to talk about storylines still in development and rooted in a publicity context that is ill-suited to in-depth discussion? If such interviews are out there, please send me the links because I haven't seen them.

Everyone has a bias: I write as an academic with a personal interest in Skins, but I don't have a mission to defend the show against fair criticism. My objective is simply to provide a space in which the creative team can talk at length about their ambitions for Gen 3. Just as people I interviewed for the Naomily book were candid about the mistakes in S4, so too have people been candid about things in Gen 3's development. If people don't want to read interviews that deal with stuff this board discusses constantly, that's their choice. But my goal is to provide resources for those who do.

And about what Dakota said in Digital Spy, seems that not only they deleted the scene of the kiss in the beer fight scene... there were another scenes with Mini and Franky being more than just friends. So how after all, they said we imagined everything, and it always was a storyline of friendship. I can understand that none of them was written as lesbians, but what about Franky's pansexuality? and all the curiosity of Mini, and things hinted in the final of S5. They can't just say it was just all about friendship, because it wasn't. Oh well, Franky's pansexuality is gone in S6 as well.

while i can understand that and accept the idea that maybe they were never written to be lesbians (i know mini's sexually ambiguous and franky was pansexual for the most part), i don't understand their sudden change in character? like, i understand how they can't be lovers or how their relationship can't be romantic.. because maybe they were never written that way although a lot of people saw and hoped them to have gone in that direction.. but why are they suddenly so.. sexual? i think my issue with both the characters atm is their approach to sex. they were absolutely terrified of sex last series and to be honest, i never really saw them conquer that fear and suddenly.. they can't seem to get enough of dicks. and the message they seem to be giving off that franky's androgyny was more of a "mood" thing and a "bad mood" thing at that.. well, pretty disappointing, imo. especially after they made such a big fuss about her androgyny just her being "be".

Agreed. For the most part Mini and Franky had issues with sex, and that was shown repeatedly in Mini's sex scenes with Nick and Franky's fascination and almost-sex scene with Matty. Why would these issues suddenly disappear? Is it enough to make all these problems disappear and have the audience come up with their own reasons on why the problems disappeared? These issues were heavily stressed and now all of a sudden Mini and Franky are having a lot of sex. And about the androgyny, wasn't that supposed to be about Franky's identity? Her speech in episode 1 of s5 was all about how she dressed a certain way because she wanted to, not because of whether she was happy or sad. And yes I know that people can change and that her style was becoming a little lax, but no one changes that drastically over the summer. And the explanation that the skins team gave for that wasn't satisfactory because in s5 Franky, through her action, the audience learned that she wouldn't change for anybody, but now all of sudden she is changing for love? Well first of all there wasn't much love between her and matty from what I saw in the first episode, and secondly I don't understand why her androgyny should be a phase of her loneliness and sadness. If it is possible for you to clear this up then it would be appreciated.

It's totally understandable that the elimination of scenes like the second kiss have upset people who want these two to be a couple--and I count myself in the group of fans who hoped Minky would happen. However, the fact that such scenes were cut seems to me to offer evidence that Skins was actually pulling back from creating expectations for a lesbian relationship.

Additionally, I think there are assumptions being made here about the nature of that kiss, the motivation behind it and the characters' respective reactions to it.
The people I spoke to never denied the existence of something between Mini and Franky. Jess even said she understood why people read things that way. It's just that in terms of the overall plans for the characters and storylines, they didn't write scenes with the intention of taking Mini and Franky's relationship down the sexual path. The power of their bond lies in something other than sex, and according to the producer, always did. But as with any powerful bond, it's sometimes a source of curiosity to both the individuals involved and the outsiders who observe it.

We, as viewers, can fill in the blanks. That's our prerogative because there are multiple readings available for stories. I am not saying that those are invalid readings. But where the debate concerns authorial intent, all of the evidence, from earliest discussions of the characters and multiple drafts of scripts to the final editing, supports the writers' statements that they weren't aiming to create 'Minky' as a lesbian relationship.

Since a lot of characters, including Mini and Franky, are based on actual people there is a fairly clear model of what the truth of a character is. But aside from that, what makes you think it's BS?

They did it in the hiatus. They basically said we imagined everything, we were delusional because we saw things that "never happened" in series 5. And about that, we are all still wondering why they make an effort to make promotion with them, at the end of series 5, in the hiatus, and even a bit in the promo of series 5. In gay magazines, talking about their relationship and stuff like that. If they meant to not make a lesbian/queer relationship between them (because by now, they have said they are nothing more than friends, and all the things in series 5 was just friendship), why they used gay media to promote the series and talking about Mini/Franky relationship. Doesn't make sense.

It's just too weird that in series 6 we still got hints of Minky, like Mini talking to Nick about Matty's "obsession" with Franky and being in love with her, and then she says: "I wonder how it feels"...
