One of my favorite pieces in the soundtrack of SKINS is, not surprisingly, from my favorite episode, s2e6, the most surrealistic and purely symbolic episode, a dream of going to school to learn to love well, prefaced by a reading of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth.

The song play when Tony shows up at that school (it's the University of Exeter in Devon, by the way) is "Walcott," the theme song of Vampire Weekend, a group of former Columbia University students whose music is wickedly ironic.

This song is a call to flee modern hedonism, using Cape Cod as a metaphor. Its use by SKINS resonates delightfully with the deep but well-masked traditionalism of Gens 1 and 2.

SKINS rejects, and seeks to save its teen viewers, from precisely what most of them understood the show to glorify - the mindless hedonism that bores Tony into seeking relief in manipulative power-games. Gen 1 is the story of how Tony goads his friends into saving him, and them, from that.

A lot like Apple (and the IPod) promoted a lot of bands, a lot of those bands didnt have a long existence shortly thereafter, Skins also brought in a lot of bands that werent well known, have a short burst of fame, and disappeared

But Florence and the Machine is the one that has gone on the strongest since appearing the infamous 'lost in the forrest doing drugs' episode (+ Effy wearing the headband)

And for season 6, Zola Jesus, a relatively obscure artist who only indie kids liked, has released another fine track recently, its called Dangerous Days, enjoy! ->

EDIT the only downside with Skins's obsession with Zola Jesus was Zola Jesus was a bit more goth pop oriented, Skins was not particularly a gothic cultural oriented show. More hipster if anything?
