Nobody ever loves anyone properly, do they?
Quote:
Not coincidentally, in this same episode death enters the drama, taking the father of the same character who asks this question. Because at the end, that's what we chiefly regret: that we didn't love better. It's by how well we love that we ultimately judge ourselves and one another. How to love well is really the only serious question. Sadly, one often finds it best addressed nowadays in teen TV romances. Cassandra's right, of course -- that's the message of s2. It's not just that she hasn't betrayed Sid. It's also that Sid's dad, before dying, manages to love well, and dies happy, as Sid understands. And Tony, in the previous episode and this one, finally begins to love both Michelle and Sid well. Henceforth, Tony, the guy whom Sid has always wanted to look up to, becomes worth looking up to, a surrogate father who hands Sid his passport and a ticket to New York and tells him to follow his love at the end of s2. Sid's father dies just when Tony finally becomes able to play the surrogate father role that Sid has always wanted him to play. Much as, in the previous episode, the hideous Sketch appears to manipulate and abuse people worse than Tony ever did, putting Tony's flaws in perspective just when Tony finally becomes able to seek and receive forgiveness. Scratch the surface, and it's really all about Tony, about a character amply endowed with everything one could want to love well, but chooses not to. __________________

I have to say this episode completely tore me up inside...The thing about skins is that it's a heartbreaking look at life and youth. This is not campy after school special. People don't always win. Growing up hurts and I like to see that hurt transferred onto a screen keeps me in check. I could really word this and discuss this much better, but I am simply too tired, but thought I'd share a bit at least.
