The Private Lives of Pippa Lee #4: Because she was a revelation.

Synopsis: At fifty, Pippa Lee positively glows with female serenity, the devoted wife of a brilliant publisher thirty years her senior, proud mother of successful twins and a lovely and adored friend and neighbor. But, when her husband spontaneously decides that they should leave New York for a retirement home as a "pre-emptive strike against decrepitude," and has an affair with someone even younger than she is, Pippa finds her beatific persona unraveling in alarming ways. The truth is, the gracious woman of the present day has seen more than her fair share of the wild side. She has finally found love and security in a family of her own. And now, that cozy world, too, is in danger.

After we've got one should I put a spoiler warning in the title too?

I just came home from seeing this and it is AMAZING. It's just so great - the film tells such a typically depressing story with a fun/light hearted-ness that is refreshing. Obviously, there's scenes of sadness where it's not needed to eb funny. But overall the film keeps up with the humour and it was just fantastic.

Blake has a lot of screentime in the movie. Twenty minutes into it is when her first starts. I'm not sure how much I can discuss because of spoilers, but it's unlike anything Blake has ever played before. You really, really see some different sides to her as an actress. Her attraction to Alan Arkin/Herb was totally believable She was just perfect in the role imo and played off everyone so well. I don't want to spoil anyone, so I won't say more. But I will say, that Blake is so pretty in some scenes it's surreal.

It's definitely a movie to go see even if Blake wasn't in it. My only issue was with one of the actors they'd casted tbh, which I felt was a weak choice. But the movie itself is great. It's funny without having to try hard, and so are the transitions (between past and present). It doesn't feel forced or anything at all. There's also some interesting bits where the story is told through cartoons and photographs As well as random flashes of the thoughts the characters are having which were kinda random but hilarious lol.

If you can see this movie. I'd definitely recommend it. Also, what I was dreading before about the movie isn't a cause of dreading whatsoever. I was surprised about that a lot lol..

It comes out in the US on October 16th if I'm not mistaken.

It's a fantastic film with an amazing cast (Robin Wright Penn is incredible and Alan Arkin is awesome at deadpanning lol).

It's a quirky film, no doubt about it. But a very well one. My friend who was with me loved it and found it hilarious and he's usually into his violent films lol.

Not sure if this review has been posted: Pippa Lee review

Quote:
Blake Lively, playing Pippa in her younger days also delivers a very confident and assured portrayal, and looks to have quite the career ahead of her in film once her television series Gossip Girl comes to an end.
Another review

Quote:
Miller and the film also benefit from a pair of excellent performances by the actresses playing Pippa. Having never seen Gossip Girl I was completely unaware of Blake Lively before seeing this film, but I’ll be keeping an eye on her. She’s extremely effective as the 16-year-old Pippa. Herb says that he sees an innate goodness in Pippa, and Lively really manages to bring that through, while playing the troubled teen with freshness and reality. There’s a real vitality to her performance that is truly enjoyable to watch.
Off to see it tomorrow.

I saw it and I loved it. Everything was great, from the acting to the dialogue and directing. Some of the characters don't get that much time but they make an impression on you and also impact on the film in some way. It's quite a sad film but it is told in such a way that the viewer isn't completely caught up in the maudlin, there are moments of humour that alleviate the sadness and heartbreak. In a sea of blockbuster films it's like a breath of fresh air. Robin Wright Penn is brilliant in it, so understated but makes Pippa to be this real and troubled character.

Blake gets much screentime, and she does so excellently, especially in one scene at the beginning where she went through varying emotions and she pulls them off brilliantly. One of, if not my favourite scene of hers as an actress. Loved it. I totally get what the reviewers were saying, as she's so captivating and very watchable (and she was stunning in this film). Pippa is so damaged and does spiral but yet there's a purity and innocence about her and Blake showed both sides to the character. Also, it was pretty obvious and conveyed very well, acting and writing wise why Pippa would be attracted to a much, much older man in Herb/Alan Arkin.

Excellent film that's character driven and does so well because the characters are pretty damn good, which is of course because of the good work from both the actors and smart writing.
