The Real Criminal Minds #1: Disturbing, sick, fascinating... and true.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss the real cases of serial killing and such. It could be cases already mentioned on the show (like the BTK case, on the most recent episode, Birthright) or any other cases you know about and want to discuss.

Most Notorious Serial Killers
  • Son of Sam (David Berkowitz)
  • Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka
  • Boston Strangler
  • BTK- Dennis Rader
  • Ted Bundy
  • Jeffrey Dahmer
  • Albert Fish
  • John Wayne Gacy
  • Ed Gein
  • Green River Killer (Gary Leon Ridgway)
  • H.H. Holmes
  • Jack the Ripper
  • Edmund Kemper
  • Pedro Lopez
  • Charles Manson
  • The Night Stalker (Richard Ramirez)
  • The Rostov Ripper (Andrei Chikatilo)
  • Dr. Harold Shipman
  • The Zodiac Killer

Personally, I've been fascinated about serial killers since I was about 13 years-old. I know most people think it's an odd subject to be fascinated about, but in all honesty, it's more common than one might think. It's one of the many ways of trying to understand the human mind. No wonder Criminal Minds has so many faithful viewers - the show has a great way to deal with the subject. It's accessible and informative, the scripts reflect a carefully done job and the cast has a great dynamic. Since the show is all about the crimes and the profilling, I think a thread like this is a must

If your familiarity with the subject goes as far the show goes, don't worry. I assume that, since you're a fan of Criminal Minds, you're most likely interested on this subject, so this can be a place to discuss and learn more about it.

Let's discuss!

Great idea for a thread!

My sister loves this true crime stuff, so I'm sure she'll be up in here soon.

I've loved reading about serial killers since I was around 13, too My favorite was always Dahmer, but lately I've had a thing for Edmund Kemper.

fetch, I've seen you on the Prison Break board Welcome here!

Kemper was probably one of the first serial killers I've read about, he's quite interesting. Also the fact that he probably wouldn't have gotten caught if he hadn't turned himself in. But my favorite, if I may say so, is Andrei Chikatilo. It took me quite a while to recover after I was done reading the case, he was such a monster. So yeah, I'd probably say he's my favorite since it was the case that affected me the most.

I watch a lot of documentary/investigation type shows that involve murderers/serial killers etc. I don't know, I just find it fascinating and disturbing how someone could do these things to other people.

Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka

Probably the most infamous Canadian serial killers They still freak me out, and I can't believe the deal they gave to Karla... such injustice, IMO

One of the most recent and high profile cases here is that of Robert Pickton. Last month he was convicted in the second-degree murders of six women, and he is also charged in the deaths of an additional twenty women. He is suspected to be involved in many more though

If you want to learn more, I suggest looking here or here, they have some great background and articles.

Yes, we post at a lot ofthe same threads on the PB board
I know I've read about Chikatilo but I can't recount anything now o.o I should reread. But I've read about Kemper recently, and what got me about him is that he always killed girls after being degraded by his mom. Then he murdered his mom so brutally, turned himself in, and denied it had anything to do with her. Wow.

Oh my gosh, this is an amazing idea for a thread! I'm actually going to school for Ciminology so I love everything about this kind of stuff. I would have to say my favorite would have to be Dahmer, because I'm just so fascinated by him and the way he did things.

I have been into serial killers for as long as I can remember!

I believe the first book I actualy ever read was a book about... The Zodiac Killer. After that I was always intrested in how the killers thought and what made them tick.

My family thinks I weird but I just brush them off and think "Yeah, and when a serial killer is next to you, won't you be happy I'll know!"

I know! I was majorly pissed. Does anyone actually buy all her crap claiming she was forced to do all those things? BS! Their case is so disturbing - but I actually have a sick, twisted curiosity in watching the tapes they made. I'm sure I probably wouldn't be able to go through half of any of the tapes, and I'd be scarred for the rest of my life, but still. I am curious about it.

Thanks for the link to that case, Ash, I'll read it asap

'Cause we rock

If I remember correctly, Crime Library has a lot of information regarding Chikatilo, so you could check the site when you feel like it. In fact, everyone should check Crime Library often, it's such a great website I think I check it on a daily basis.

Personally, I don't buy it one bit. The more that I read and watched, the more angry and frustrated I became. I can understand the curiosity and in a way I share it too, but I don't think that I could ever watch them... they would be just too, awful.

Has anyone seen the movie Karla? I know there was a lot of controversy about it here, but I haven't seen it yet

Good for you Chrissy

I know *shivers* I don't remember what happened to the tapes- did Karla reveal where they were as a part of her deal?

I always see that movie on the video rental shop, but I never bring myself to rent it. I keep thinking it will either suck really bad or it will disturb me. I'll probably watch it this year, though.

This is an interesting thread idea

I've always been strangely fascinated (and horrified) with/by Jack the Ripper. It's just gruesome, and one of the pictures of his victims still haunts me. I shiver whenever I see it, I know they showed the picture once on CM and I couldn't focus for the rest of the episode. I can't remember the name of her right now, but it's in poor quality and she's all cut up so it basically looks like her eyes are all white (maybe they are, I don't know much about the post mortum aspects of death) and it also looks like she's smiling (I assume he cut her up from ear to ear). So...violent and very, very disturbing.

Awesome! I would love to be known as your official teacher.

Back to the Zoidac Killer, I have always been fascinated with him, even before the movie came out. I always wonder whats inside of their heads, it's fascinating.
