January 26: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020 (If you didn’t read 10 new authors, that’s fine! Just do what you can.)

I didn't realize how much non fiction I listened to in 2020. I'll talk about the new authors who wrote fiction that I listened to in 2020.

1. Agatha Christie - never read a book by her before. I chose And then There Were None as my first and I liked it a lot. I will read more from her.
2. Truman Capote - I listened to In Cold Blood. It was good but also different from what I expected. I thought it'd be written as a straight facts book rather than telling a story that really happened through a fiction lens
3. Caren Lissner - I read Carrie Pilby
4. Shannon Hale - I read an ARC of Kind of a Big Deal
5. Chris Cander - I read The Weight of a Piano

Oh cool question!

1. Zora Neale Hurston (Their Eyes Were Watching God)
2. Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go)
3. Ta-Nehisi Coates (The Water Dancer)
4. Cheryl Strayed (Wild)
5. Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind)
6. Brit Bennett (The Vanishing Half)
7. VE Schwabb (The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue)
8. L.M. Montgomery (Anne of Green Gables)
9. Erin Morgenstern (The Night Circus)
10. Samantha Shannon (The Priory of the Orange Tree)

A few great books, a few middle-of-the-road and a few letdowns, but a whole lot of new authors. And there a lot more authors whose books I read for the first time last year - starting to read memoirs has really broadened my scope

I want to read this one. I liked the movie.

Anyone you'd read more stuff from?

I like dark books so I'd be surprised if I didn't.

Yes definitely! The only authors I don't want to read more by are Kazuo Ishiguro, Erin Morgenstern and V.E. Schwabb. Maybe I'd read another Erin Morgenstern book, because I enjoyed the Night Circus (but I didn't love it). Kazuo Ishiguro is just not my cup of tea, didn't like that book and the V.E. Schwabb book was a real disappointment. I really liked or even loved all the other books!

I never read V.E. Schwabb so I can't speak about her writing style.

With Kazuo Ishiguro...I'll try to go into Never Let Me Go without expectations. I saw the movie years ago and liked it, so I'll just have to hope that gets me through.

Was your frustration that they didn't run away? That is the #1 issue I see people mention.
