suggestions needed: good books

I know this belongs on the Book forum but anyway, when I last checked there, not many people posted so that's why I'm starting this here. I hope that's okay and if not, then you can feel free to move this thread.

But alright, it's been such a long time since I last read and I actually sort of miss it, so I want to start reading again. So yeah I'm looking for some suggestions. I would like to read some books I could relate to. I'm 17, and life is a little bit too messed up right now, so I guess I'm looking for books that have a good message behind them. Like when a lesson is learned & such. Although I wouldn't mind romantic books, but yeah.

My friend read "Perfect World" by Brian James recently and she showed me some quotes from the book, such as:

"i'm not that person anymore...im different than i was in septemeber when i wanted to be like them...when i wanted to be liked...when i wanted to pretend all the time the way they do...the way they pretend not to have their own opinions or feelings and not care and that nothing is wrong ever they complain about their parents and not getting enough money to buy the things they dont need. they complain about having to do homework and take tests and not being able to spend more time sitting here making fun of anyone who doesnt look exactly the way they think they shoul. that's what makes them happy..and i don't know what about it ever made me think i wanted to be that way"

"i see the sun through my tears..it sparkles in them and everything twinkles like the first few flakes of a snowstorm and something about that makes me stop running... something being able to see something so beatiful in the middle of so much that's painful. maybe that's how it is when you give up. maybe you can't see beautiful things until then...and when you do they are too beautiful to hold on to."

I love those quotes & that's the kind of books I'm looking for, so I hope that sort of gives you guys an idea. But as I said, romance is always welcome too!

One of my favorite books is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It's a little screwed up though, so read it with caution. You have to be prepared to deal with some pretty heavy topics.

Her writing style is so distinctive, it's great.

Another one of my favorite authors is Francesca Lia Block. Her writing style is a lot like what you seem to like from those few quotes. I'd reccomend Echo or Violet and Claire.

Shouldn't this go to the books board?

There's so many great books out there like The Lovely Bones, The Bell Jar, Memoirs of a Geisha and all those books.
I went book shopping yesterday and thought I'd give Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code a read and see what the hype is about. I am so glad I did. I've almost finished and it is the most amazing book I've ever read and that is not an understatement. Cannot recomend it enough. I'm not even into art and religion and I love it.

  • any jostein gaardner book (it's philosophy but really a good read)
  • any chick lit. if you're in that kinda mood
  • anything by paulo cohello (i hope i got the name right)
  • stargirl (jerry spinelli)
  • nineteen eighty-four (george orwell)

well that's all for now.

I can't believe no-one suggested "Catcher In The Rye" yet Lovely.
Oh, and also "To Kill A Mockingbird".

SpinBeneathCandy, Ledi *knows* it should be in the Books Board. She says in the first line of her post. Apparently, you didn't read her post!

I don't read anything Ledi writes.

To Kill A Mocking Bird, is really good. I must agree it was one of the only books I actually read for class, I would usually just read the books I wanted to read.

I hated The Da Vinci Code, it made me want to sleep and it was overrated.

I liked it, but then I read Angels and Demons by the same author and I found out it was identical to The Da Vinci Code. And as predictable.
So now I'm very disappointed.

So .. you're clairvoyant, then? Because I don't see how you could give a reply without reading the question.

Anyway.

White Oleander is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it long before the movie came out, and I don't know how they compare, but I could NOT put this down. I loved every word of it.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is also a classic that I finished in about a week. I read it in 8th grade, and I found it to be beautiful. I would like to read it again ...

Anything by James Elroy is also good. I'm reading American Tabloid, and it really grabs you, you can't put it down until you get to the ending They're really difficult to follow, because the plots change so much, and they're really violent at times, but it's worth it!

I'll think of more later, I'm a total bookworm and I have about 500 books I could recommend ..

OH! How could I forget 1984? I read it in 4 days. Freaking awesome. And it's one of those books that makes you think, oh my God, what if this happened in real life? It was a little creepy with how much the government really knows about you ...
