I hate to disagree, but I tried to read the unabridge version of The Stand and I couldn't make it through it. I mean, it went pages and pages without talking about any of the main characters. I made it 300 pages into the unabridges version and then picked up the original, bridged version and read it in a few days. I liked it much better. I would like to, one day read the unabridged version, it just might be a little slow for someone who doesn't know the story line.

I really liked Delores Claiborne. Very good book. And I've heard The Shining is his scariest, but I haven't read it. I'm a wuss.

Oh, I definitely second the recommendation of IT. And The Stand (unabridged). I also have to read a good few more, but those two can't go unread.

Oh, and of course, there's Different Seasons, most notably for Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Body. Apt Pupil is awesome as well, but partly because it's pretty thoroughly disturbing. These aren't horror, but they're amazing stories.

The Stand is seriously one of the best books ever written, but I agree with everyone else who have recommended the unabridged version. It's way more compelling. SK's scariest book is IT, hands down, makes you pee your pants and hide under the covers.

Good choices.

'Salem's Lot was a little slow to build up, but once it got its momentum...very scary. I guess that can be said with most King books. He loves the details so sometimes you have to stick it out for a few hundred pages before anything happens.

I agree about getting the unabridged version of "The Stand". I read it. I LOVED it. To this day, sometimes my mind wonders and I think about what the world would be like if something similar to the book really happened. It may not have jump out at you scares, but it definitely got me thinking.

"Cell" is kind of a "The Stand" lite version, if you're looking to read something slightly similar in story, but much shorter and more fast paced.

I'd add "Desperation" to the list of suggestions. Hopefully you didn't watch the TV movie that just came out based on the book. The TV movie did not do it justice, but most of the film adaptations don't. Scary stuff. If you read Desperation, I suggest waiting a few years before reading "The Regulators". Otherwise, it'll be a confusing experience. At least it was for me. lol

I'm currently reading "It" as well. Only a few hundred pages in, but so far so good. I'd love to know what you thought about the books after you've read them, if you don't mind?

It and The Stand are my favourites definitely

I also think Firestarter is very underrated, I really enjoyed that one

I can't wait for you to start reading IT. It is my favorite. I read it when I was 12, and several times since. It never gets old to me.

I'm not a fan of clowns, but I want to read It. I'm just trying to get the nerve to do so.

I remember years ago, my friend and I were watching the movie It (not as good as the book) on tv. It was night, we were sitting in her living room and the windows were open because it was summer. My boyfriend at the time and his buddy crept up to the window and yelled "Boo"!. I swear, my friend and I lept up about 6 feet off the couch.
