13-year-old Jessie Keyser lives in the small village of Clifton, Indiana with her ma, pa, brothers, and sisters in the year 1840. She's lived in Clifton since she was a baby and doesn't remember before when they lived in Pennsylvania. A joint statement from Disney and Shyamalan's Blinding Edge Pictures says: "(We) believe these claims to be meritless". Simon & Schuster spokeswoman Tracy Van Straaten adds, "This is a children's book that sold more than half a million copies and won prizes, so it's not an obscure book for us." Shyamalan has previously battled a copyright lawsuit brought by a Pennsylvania screenwriter who claimed the plot from his 2002 film Signs mirrored his unpublished script Lord Of The Barrens.

OMG I remember this book. I loved, loved, LOVED it. Such a clever, unusual plot.

I have never seen The Village, but if it is similar to this book I'm sure I will like it. That sucks about the plagairism though.

I read this book years ago and I remember really liking it as well. It was so long ago that I don't really remember details though. The plot was very clever.

I read this in elementary school. It was interesting how she had to escape to help them get proper medical attention because although technically they lived in the present in that exhibit they weren't allowed to leave and the kids had no idea. And the way she had to prove that she was from it by reciting the presidents - well the presidents as they would be during her supposed time.

That's interesting about this book and the Village... I didn't know, interesting.
