Reading goals for 2004

What do you want to read before now and the end of the year?

***

I'm in the middle of Harry Potter OotP. Should be done this week. Then I have a bunch of borrowed books I really need to get to - several "Lovejoy" mysteries, and The Shadow of the Torturer, to name a few. I also want to read the next "Mary Russell" story as soon as I can find it.

I would simply like to make a dent in my "to be read" pile. And it's a BIG pile. And I keep adding to it. Making it BIGGER. I'm never gonna catch up!

There are a few series I'd like to finish up and I'd like to get my TBR overflow box emptied. I'd also like to catch up on the Harlequin Luna books. I get a subscription, so every month the new book is mailed to me. I've only read two of eight so far.

I bought the four-volume set, The World of Mathematics by James R. Newman, in a second hand store some years ago. I flipped through a volume before I bought it, and I could see that Newman was a lively writer on the subject (which is math history, rather than math instruction), but the whole thing comes to about 2500 pages, which makes me reluctant to start reading it. I don't like to have partially-read books around the house.

This was the first year that I decided to set a reading goal. I got tired of looking at mount TBR so I resolved to read a minimum of 36 books in 2004. I'm currently at #26 and right on target.

I don't have any definite plans as to what I will read next...but I am looking forward to reading these books before the end of December:

Staying Dead by Laura Gilman
Green Rider by Kristen Britain
Industrial Magic by Kelley Armstrong (to be released)
Incubus Dreams (to be released)
Visions in Death by J.D Robb
Heat Stroke by Rachel Caine
Heartbreaker by Julie Garwood

I want to finally read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and finally finish Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire. They've been sitting on my shelf for a while.

Hey, that is a good idea! I should figure out how many books I need to read per month to clean up my "borrowed" pile. The TBR pile is probably a couple hundred books, so that's not a realistic goal, but I bet I can at least make a dent in the borrowed ones.

I actually joined some 50 book challenge groups but I don't know if I will make it to 50 books or not this year. I try to read at least 50 every year, but there have been a few years that I read a lot less than that. I've read 21 books so far this year and if I get to everything in the TBR pile, I'll probably make it to 50 this year. The first half of the year was terrible because I was sick, but since I've been feeling better, I've been reading a lot more (until the Olympics, anyway).

I have so many books I want to read. My problems are: I have no money to buy them; no time to hit the library, and no spare time to read anymore. My list of books to read is huge and I will definatly not get to them before the years end. And I keep adding onto the list. Of the books I actually do have, I plan to finish by years end: Madame Bovery, The Great Husband Hunt, & All Dressed in White.

I just did that tonight, too. I took a different bus route, and found a new (to me) second hand bookstore. So of course I had to go in. I bought "The Wimp Factor: Gender Gaps, Holy Wars, and the Politics of Anxious Masculinity" by Stephen Ducat, and "The Cheating Culture: Why More Americans are Doing Wrong to Get Ahead" by David Callahan. These join the tower of books and magazines I mean to get around to reading.

I just want to buy a good book I haven't read a dozen times and finish it all the way through. I've always had that problem ever since I was a little girl, I would read the last page of the book as soon as I got it!
