Gone With The Wind

I coudn't find the previous thread on this book, so I decided to start another one.

To start some discussion: Who has read this book, what did you think of it, what were you favorite and least favorite characters and scenes?

Totally loved it from the first page...it's one of those books which is instantly readable and interesting One of my friends just finished reading it as well on my recommendation, which I was chuffed about It was funny because each week at work she'd tell me where she was up to and I'd try and place it in my mind, but I didn't want to spoil anything so I'd be really vague like "how many times has she been married" and the first time, my friend goes "once...why? WHY???"

It was over a year ago that I read it as well (I think, or maybe exactly on a year?) and I remember it so vividly, all the characters and what happens...it's amazing

Favourite scene? Too many but fleeing to Tara comes to mind, and the Bazaar of course, and Rhett's proposal! And I adored Melly

I just found it in my school library yesterday and I'm thinking of reading it just as soon as exams are over

i adored this book and for many years it was my favorite. such wonderful characters mitchell created, my favorite being melly who i always thought was the hero of this story. i loved the parallel made between scarlett and the city of atlanta - the "destruction" and recreation.

I read it when I was 16 but my snobby english teacher didn't approve She kept saying it was a trashy novel amnd trying to put me off it. I loved it so much, it taught me loads about the South and that period of history. My favourite character was Rhett easily, I just wanted to shake Scalett sometimes. Other times I couldn't help admiring her. Similiar to Rhett's feelings I suppose.

I do utterly despise Ashley as a character.

Favourite scene I don't know, there are many. Maybe when Scarlett visits Rhett in jail and faints in his arms, I did like that quite a bit

BTW Who else hates people refering to Rhett raping Scarlett? That is such bull. Sure he was forceful but Scarlett was not raped, she loved every minute of it, she says as much the next day when she is all hopeful that things will improve. Rhett obviously did bring her pleasure yeah that sounds like rape all right The film shows her struggling when Rhett carries her up the stairs sure but the very next sceen shows her smiling and satisifed in bed. It is made very clear that she wanted it so why do so many people call it rape and act shocked that I find Rhett and Scarlett romnantic

I agree that all the fuss over the "rape" is pretty ridiculous. Personally, I think it's hot.

I love this book. Well worth the read; I was so hooked, I finished it in about a week.

I read the book 4 yaers ago and loved it. My favourite characters were Wade and Ella, Melly, Rhett and sometimes Scarlett. My least favourite character was Bonny (she was so spoiled).
My favourite scene is when Melly dies and Rhett talks about how she was the only lady he ever met (and looks like he was watching Melly saying goodbay and leaving the room). The least favourite scenes: every time Scarlett complains about Wade and Ella (they're her children, can't she love them?) and the scene when Scarlett meets a woman from the north who says that she wouldn't let a black girl touch her children and Pete is almost crying (damn woman).
I don't think Rhett raped Sacrlett, it was quite clear in the book and in the movie that he didn't force her

I found it in my mum's stuff nearly six years ago when I was eleven or twelve and I couldn't just forget it after reading it that all projects that could possibly be patterned after any part or character of the story, I did!

I just loved Scarlett's spunk and idealism... although I really didn't know how to react to the movie after I watched it. It made me feel stupid or something. But maybe that's just because I expected more from it because I read the book.

I was here a couple of days ago and made a large reply to the topic, but my connection went haywire and I lost it all. I wasn't in the mood right then to write it all, but I'll give it a go now.

I've mentioned it before, but one of my favourite scenes is when Rhett asks Scarlett to be his mistress. Scarlett doesn't think of the moral or social ramifications of the time. She refuses because she doesn't want "a passel of brats". lol

I don't think Rhett ever raped Scarlett and I've never heard *that* scene referred to in that way.

I like Scarlett so much because she's a bit of an *anti-heroine*. She's not soppy and can be quite a bitch, but deep down she does have a good heart. She goes for things and doesn't let anything stand in her way.

The book is so much better than the movie, and I really enjoyed the movie. It's just not in the same class.

Here! Here!

I loved that 'passel of brats' bit, too, but I think it was when she proposed to Ashley or something, telling him that he loved her. I actually did a sort-of dramatic monologue of than scene when I was twelve (for a requirement in high school) and I knew then that I looked really stupid and nearly on fire, but man, being Scarlett for even just five minutes was... liberating! I think Gone with the Wind is one of those books that you can read more than once, and you never really get sick of it.

That makes sense to me. When I first read the book, it was almost with this odd sense of unease throughout the whole thing because I did like Scarlett but still alternately wanted to yell at her, lol.

Has anyone read the sequel? I read it a while ago; I think it's called Scarlett. I remember being so happy when I found out that there was a sequel, lol. The romantic in me just had to see Rhett and Scarlett get back together somehow, after the book left me hanging.
