"North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell Discussion #1:

North and South:
When her father leaves the Church, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. In "North and South", Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale created one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature.

I love this book. Some people consider Gaskell's style what would happen if you crossed Charles Dickens with Jane Austen.

I loved the North and South TV miniseries so I definitely want to check out the book. I read that Thornton was quite different in the miniseries than he was in the book. Is that true?

It's been a while since I saw the miniseries, so I can't quite remember how he differed, but I do have it on DVD now, so I should watch it again.

I adored the BBC miniseries. Is it comparable to the book?

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me

I imagined RA as John Thornton while reading the whole book because I saw the mini series first
