I read Memoirs of a Geisha in 6th grade. My mother freaked out all her friends by telling them that. I never finished it though and I really want to. Now that this thread is started I might read it. School's out in 4 days, I could start then. Anyway, from what I remember about the book, I loved it. I love Japanese culture and it's cool to look at it from another perspective.

I've had the book for almost a year now and I still haven't properly read through it. I've skimmed, yes, and I like what I've read so far. It's my to-finish list though, and that's a long one.

I remember reading reviews of this book when it first came out and I heard so many great things about it. I just never got around to reading it unfortunately. So I came in here hoping to find out what I was missing

I've read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm quite interested in the whole culture and subject matter of the book so it made very interesting reading. Plus when I picked it up I couldn't put it down!

I also love the way Arthur Goldman opens up the book... the narrative voice that he uses is completely beautiful and seems so real the description and everything and the odd thing is that he is a guy... a mean whoa! that takes real talent esp since he wasn't japanese and to dscribe a culture that he wasn't his and make it seem like his own was just wonderful... i love that book! It's so well-written and i reading her journey to become a geisha it's so exciting..

I know what you mean, and also the fact that you feel that Sayuki (the lead character) is telling you, in person, her stoyry.

Well at least that's what happened to me....

To even talk about the book, makes me feel happy

Corrsfanre- the whoel geisha journey of Sayuki was thrilling... I mean you just had to read to see what would happen. I hated Hatusmano(sp?-The girl who tried to stop Sayuki from becoming a geisha) but I ended up feeling bad for her because she died as a drunken prosititute. The characters in Memoirs have so much depth and I would love to read it again... It's such a wonderful book... Hehe I was so in love with it when i read the book... So good. So good.

A friend of mine lent this book to me last week, and I started reading it today. I didn't think I was going to like it, but I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. It was fantastic.

I read this book earlier this year and I loved it! It was interesting to learn about the Japanese and Geisha cultures. It was a book I couldn't put down.

Well, this thread's been dead for over a year but I just read this book so I thought I'd pitch in my two cents and say that I really enjoyed it as well. I also hated Hatsumomo, but at the same time did feel pity for her. I thought it was just overall very nicely done and I certainly feel like I now know more about Japanese culture.
