May Book Club: The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

Alright everyone, with a last minute vote we have our book club choice for May. So, hopefully everyone will get a chance to read the book this month because it looks really interesting.

Quote:
An extraordinary debut novel of love that survives the fires of hell and transcends the boundaries of time.

The narrator of The Gargoyle is a very contemporary cynic, physically beautiful and sexually adept, who dwells in the moral vacuum that is modern life. As the book opens, he is driving along a dark road when he is distracted by what seems to be a flight of arrows. He crashes into a ravine and suffers horrible burns over much of his body. As he recovers in a burn ward, undergoing the tortures of the damned, he awaits the day when he can leave the hospital and commit carefully planned suicide—for he is now a monster in appearance as well as in soul.

A beautiful and compelling, but clearly unhinged, sculptress of gargoyles by the name of Marianne Engel appears at the foot of his bed and insists that they were once lovers in medieval Germany. In her telling, he was a badly injured mercenary and she was a nun and scribe in the famed monastery of Engelthal who nursed him back to health. As she spins their tale in Scheherazade fashion and relates equally mesmerizing stories of deathless love in Japan, Iceland, Italy, and England, he finds himself drawn back to life—and, finally, in love. He is released into Marianne's care and takes up residence in her huge stone house. But all is not well. For one thing, the pull of his past sins becomes ever more powerful as the morphine he is prescribed becomes ever more addictive. For another, Marianne receives word from God that she has only twenty-seven sculptures left to complete—and her time on earth will be finished.

Already an international literary sensation, The Gargoyle is an Inferno for our time. It will have you believing in the impossible.
I'm going to be sure to make a trip to the library on Monday to pick this up so I'll be back eventually to share what I think about it. Everyone else, enjoy

Thanks for the thread, Angel! I hope you'll start it soon!

Sarah, how far along are you? What chapter are you at? I want to discuss it with you, but I don't want to spoil you or anything. (I'll be sure to use spoiler tags when I do, so I won't spoil everybody else.) I'm at chapter 14.

You mentioned, Sarah, that it reminds you of Lestat because the narrator refers us as his readers. It's funny that you mention that because there's actually a review on my copy of the book that compares the book to Anne Rice.

Speaking of the narrator, did he ever reveal his name to us? Even though I'm pretty far along, I don't remember! I don't think he did...

I think I'm on Chapter 9 page 144

Oh, can you share what the review said about comparing it to Anne Rice's cause my version doesn't have that review

Haven't seen any name for him yet

It wasn't really a review (sorry) -- it's actually just praise for the book. It states:

I'm glad his name wasn't revealed after all. I was thinking that I must be getting awfully forgetful if I didn't remember his name! I was thinking about his name because:

Spoiler:

How are you liking Marianne? She's quite a character so far.

What chapter did you get to? I don't think I have the same version as you -- you have hardcover, right? I have paperback. Just so I don't spoil you by accident.

Spoiler:

Have you gotten to how they first met yet? I loved that story.

Did you get a chance to read a bit more today, Sarah? I got to Chapter 16 last night... I wished I could've read more, but I had to be up a little early today. It's getting so good! I just love the chapters when Marianne talks about their past lives.
