LOL, you got me curious enough to watch the FotR movie in French ... sounds like they kept the funny book translation for the overdub. Frodon, Bilbon, Grand-Pas ... it's not even Baggins, it's Sacquet.

OMG! even I didn't watch it in French, and I totally forgot about Sacquet instead of Baggins! That was the worst indeed...

In portuguese it's 'Bolseiro'. I think 'Sacquet' sounds a lot better.

I've read all the books several times, but I plan on reading RotK one more time before the final movie comes out. I like to read the books before the movie because there's so much backstory that they just can't put into the films. I remember that I read LotR about a year before FotR came out, and wasn't that impressed with it. That happened to be my junior year of college, very stressful, so that might have dampened my enjoyment of it. Then when I saw the premiere of FotR, I had to go out and get the books (again, because I'd left the one-volume version in my apartment over christmas break) and I was amazed at how good they were. It was really nice to have a visual of the characters and locations. Each time I read the books I'm astonished again at how good they are.

I read the hobbit before I read the LotR books, and was not that impressed with it. Probably if I tried it again now I'd enjoy it more. I never finished the Silmarillion but it's on the shelf to one day be read all the way through...

I rambled a bit, didn't I? lol. That's what you get from a booklover.

Forgot I was going to mention there was a spanish exchange student in our lab this fall and he talked about the translations from the book to the movie. I'm sure the translators do just fine with the book, but this is one series I'd very much rather read in english.

Finished two towers a few days back and now starting on return of the king.

I'm so on track to finish before the film. Which was my goal. But it's gotten me so jazzed for the film that it's getting harder and harder to wait.

I had to put The Two Towers down because I had fantasy burnout, but I'll get back to it as soon as I finish the two library books I'm working on now. I still have my goal of finishing LOTR before I see the third movie.

Ok folks, just trying to determine where I should start my experience. Should I start with Hobbit for the back story or should I go straight to the LOR, Fellowship of the Ring. Will I be lost, confused or otherwise miss important details if the Hobbit doesn't come first? I need input before I can start so your advice is appreciated.

I haven't read The Hobbit in 16 years and I hardly remember it and I'm not confused while reading LOTR, but I don't know, it might be different for you. I hope that helps.

I haven't read the Hobbit yet and I've read LOTR. I don't think it really matters where you start. FOTR was a good start for me though.

I'd say it depends. If you enjoy the hobbit or dwarf heavy sections of the story then "The Hobbit" is the starting point I'd recommend. But I don't think it takes away from the trilogy if you haven't read it. A couple of little things mean a bit more after reading "The Hobbit" but not so much as to make a great deal of difference.

If you enjoy the interaction of the human and elfkind charcters more . . then I'd recommend starting with the "Fellowship of the Ring."

One thing I'd forgotten from what I'd read in high school .. and didn't pick up on in the film was the fact that Arwen and her father, Elrond were half elf .. in that they had some human in their ancestory. That's why Arwen had to make the choice. She could chose to live the near immortal life of the elfkind. Or she could chose a mortal life and though long lived in comparison to human be doomed to mortality. That's why her decision was so big.

I look back on the movie now and have watched the films multiple times and I don't think the reason for the seriousness her choice was clearly explained. In the movie I felt more like they used the fact that he'd age and die before her as the major consequence.

Perhaps the extended edition will help clear it up more?

I think that in the movie it isn't so important. And because so many people haven't read the books beforehand and thus won't understand.

Agreed .. you know I always hear so much about what wasn't included in the film from the books .. but to be honest I'm shocked at just how much was included.

I'm suprised how accurate Peter Jackson was, considering the fact that Tolkien gives so much description. It's nearly impossible to replicate a book exactly.

I'm about half done with The Two Towers now and I can't believe LOTR bored me when I was younger. It's like I'm reading a different book now (when it's actually that I'm a different person now). I can also appreciate the books as a writer because I see all of the world-building details and how much work went into this story.

BTW, I agree about the movies. Scenes had to be left out because a 400 page book can't be made into a totally faithful movie adaptation, but the heart of the story is still there on screen- especially in the extended versions.
