To Kill a Mockingbird | Go Set a Watchman (Harper Lee) #1: The unforgettable novel. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving

To Kill a Mockingbird | Go Set a Watchman

'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition.

Go Set a Watchman is set during the mid-1950s and features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Scout (Jean Louise Finch) has returned to Maycomb from New York to visit her father Atticus. She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand both her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood.

Thanks for starting. The first book is so empowering. I think I read it in high school, as I'm sure most of us did. It's not something I normally have read otherwise.

My class had just watched the movie. But for extra credit she let those who wanted to read the book. I ended up loving it. Not to many books we were made to read in school that I ended up enjoying.

You should.

April,I agree. The books we're meant to read for class you don't think you'd even like, but sometimes you can get surprised.

How do you guys feel about the early reviews for Go Set a Watchman? Is the info. that's come out, making anyone rethink the choice to read it?

I don't really care for reviews. That's the thing. Everyone will have their own judgements.
