Jane Eyre anyone?

I'm thinking about reading Jane Eyre, but I don't want to waste my time if it's not worth reading. The only reason that I'm even thinking about reading it is because I just watched Pride & Prejudice for the hundredth time and can't seem to get enough of Mr. Darcy.

You see, I kind of have this thing for byronic heroes. They're all moody, attractively mysterious, and emotionally damaged. :::Sigh::: What more could a girl ask for?

So, anyway, can you guys offer any advice? Ever read it? Worth reading?

lol Okay, okay. You've convinced me. I'll read it. I saw this really beautiful gilded copy of it at borders.....and stupidly passed it up for a paperback. Psh. That'll teach me to be cheap, I guess.

Thanks for the response, can't wait to see what Dear Mr. Rochester is like. :-D

I wanted to buy it. But the lady at the bookstore told me she isn't sure whether the pinguin series contain excerpts from the book or the whole book. I decided not to buy it. Maybe I will order it online. I really want to read the book.

I've read it and it's one of the Classics from the Bronte sisters.

I it! Check also the biography of the Brontes, fascinating women who live mid 1800s.

If you want strong character women, not the damsel in distress kind, then you would love Jane Eyre.

Jane Eyre is classic and contains all the typical drama one could expect from that period. Yet, what makes the book stand out are the themes of love as it deals with one's own past. I'll save you a lengthy response, I love the book by the way, and just get to the point.

Jane Eyre has the basic brooding lead male yet this is Jane's story. I really don't agree with the typical damsel types and while she is kind of cliche, what makes her memorable is the fact we don't have the standard pretty flower. Jane is very simple looking, no great outer beauty, but we can't help but be drawn to her plight. It's that plight in the novel we get hooked by, imo.

I personally, like the arc of how the story goes in the book. There are great little moments I love in it.

However, if you're looking to find a mirror to Stephanie Meyers' Twilight series, I wouldn't reach that far. I don't mind Meyer's books, they're great but Bronte classics like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights have a much more in-depth character development whereas Meyers books - while fun to read - are not the same caliber.

Okay, now before people freak out in defense of Meyers' work, I draw these opinions not only from my preference but from the reactions of close friends who were a bit disappointed in reading the Bronte novels expecting some hidden clue to Meyer's books.

What people forget is that when authors' talk about being inspired by certain novels or works, oftentimes they fuse archetype profile from their favorites.

For example...Edward Rochester in Jane Eyre = broodish, secretive, angsty, stubborn, etc.

Edward Cullens = broodish, angsty, vampire ( lol )

But when you take the core elements from both novels they're very different.
Jane Eyre is such a great classic for its time.

I like the way they work the themes of love and forgiveness in the novel and the way Jane and Edward parallel each other in their emotional development, so to speak

I hope this helped I'm a sucker for the classics.
