Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister
in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be North America.
Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated.
As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and
one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games."
The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change
but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen
by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.(Scholastic Press, 2008)

Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop.
And what scares her more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try.
As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's
cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without
a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other,
the consequences will be horrifying.(Scholastic Press, 2009)

Katniss Everdeen, girl on fire, has survived,
even though her home has been destroyed.
There are rebels. There are new leaders.
A revolution is unfolding.(Scholastic Press, 2010)

Continuing the convo!

Quote:

I have It took me a while to pick up the first book because at the time I had not read anything in this genre. This was just after Catching Fire first came out, yeah way back then. I mean the book, not the movie.- These Broken Stars
You know that's kind of how it was for me. The only other books I read in this genre were the Twilight Saga but I liked the way those were written.

Every time I picked up THG I just felt odd reading it because it didn't feel right in terms of what I was used to.

I'd seen all the movies so I was familiar with them but with the Mockingjay coming out I wanted all the details so I just had to read it. So basically my book order ended up being: Mockingjay, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire.

I've now become a huge fan.

darkxtwisty 12-07-2014 05:19 PM

I still haven't finished Mockingjay. I just don't think it's as good as the others. It's taken me two years to get to page 80. I've read 100 pages in another book I'm reading now just in the last 24 hours. :thud:

I told my sister I'd finish it by Christmas so we can go see the movie, if she doesn't see it before then. She's a huge fan. Though she spoiled the ending of MJ for me.

Really?

MJ is actually my favorite one. I love how dark it was on a depression level.

I'm almost done with CF. Currently on chapter 23.

darkxtwisty 12-07-2014 06:20 PM

Does it get better, then? I normally like dark and depressing, but I don't know...something about it just doesn't capture my interest.
I've heard mixed reviews. Some love it, others have said the same thing I'm feeling. My sister claims it gets better later in the book.
My sister and I have very, very different tastes, though.

^ I feel the same way about MJ even tho I felt like it was kind of rushing since it seems that the writers got no idea what to do w/ Katniss include w/ other characters.. I was like.. I know it was sad, but I just feel like something void in the book.. It just so disappointing that THG was slowing, but good, but CF def the best one I read..

darkxtwisty 12-07-2014 07:09 PM

It just seems like there's really no thematic purpose to it. I'm sure it's an enjoyable read if you read for the purpose of a story, but for me, reading has to be 'educational' or I have to take something from the story, otherwise I get bored easily.

Also, I liked Catching Fire but I hated the ending, which led into Mockingjay and dictates its plot, which may be another reason I have a hard time reading it.

Ron_Beckett 12-07-2014 08:46 PM

I found the thematic purpose of mj to be the depression and PTSD. It can be hard to do those when that's the focal point of the story but that's what I loved about it.

The second half of mockingjay does pick up, you should try finish it

darkxtwisty 12-07-2014 10:14 PM

I got to the part where they mention

Spoiler:

And that whole bit was interesting. I'm also reading two other books and have four more library books to finish. I literally sat in a pile of books all day, and honesty it felt pretty darn good.

Ron_Beckett 12-08-2014 06:35 AM

LOL isn't it fun when you have a row of books to finish and get through.

~*~*~

Finished Catching Fire. Man that was amazing!

I can certainly rank them now :D

1. Mockingjay
2. Catching Fire
3. Hunger Games

Stay to the Lights 12-09-2014 05:02 AM

I think for me it's THG, CF, MJ.

I'm glad you finished it! :D

Ron_Beckett 12-09-2014 06:32 AM

I'm glad I finished too though I didn't want to because I wasn't ready for them to end

Stay to the Lights 12-12-2014 08:00 AM

Yeah, with books, we never are.

Rebel Hearts 12-12-2014 03:54 PM

It's been a while since I read this series, but I remember that Catching Fire was my favorite out of the three for some reason.

So my order is CF, THG, MJ
