I haven't read it either, I'm wondering about part of the plot line.
Yes I do live in Portland.. Love it here in fact. What do you come for? __________________

I loved the movie with Jeremy Irons, and people have told me the book isn't as good, so I'm not going to read it.

I'm considering reading this for my critical paper this year. I have to pick from a list of AP-approved books or something...this one appears to be one of the more interesting choices.

I actually read the screenplay of Lolita... it's actually a screenplay that the author himself wrote. I thought it was really good, but now I am trying to start on the actual novel... I'll tell what I think when I'm done!

I've read Lolita this summer and, infact, i found this book very good. Of course, the story is provocative, but I like that author doesn't say anything good or bad about the actions of the main character. We are left to made our own opinion about the them. Of course, it would be insane to approve the actions of the main character.
When we practiced writing critics on my Croatian classes (I'm from Croatia), I was writing about 'Lolita' and got an A (or 5)! __________________

The book was boring as hell.
The movie was really good though, I suggest you rent that and don't read the book. __________________

I'd bought the book a long time ago and I'm still not finished with it. It seems alot longer than it should be. I mean, one small event takes up fifteen pages. The plot is well-thought, but it seems a bit boring. I hope to finish it soon, though.

Nabakov is probably the best writer Ive read. And Lolita is one of the best books Ive encountered. The love story, if told in two sentences, seems obscene (old man seduces a twelve year old); but once you read the book, you realize that its simply real. Many people have called Lolita the one believable love story of our time, and Im inclined to agree.
As for Nabakovs writing, its lengthy, but its fun! His wordplay and very descriptiveness are the very things that keep the story together. His little witticisms are a perfect backdrop to the actions they describe. One of my favourites are "vibgyoric (prismatic pulsations) vibrations". Vibgyor is Roy G. Biv -- the colours of the rainbow -- backwards, and so prismatic pulsations makes sense; not to mention, alliteration! I have to admit I stole that word for my Personal Statement for college applications. So yeah, highly recommended. |
