Getting Into Book Editing/Publishing

Well, we have a thread that has advice for writers and how to get published. My dream job personally is to get into book publishing/book editing, and I am having a really difficult time searching for more information on this. Anyone have any personal experience in the field or advice to share?

Where are you in your career? How old are you? Where do you live? New York is the publishing capital, but there are certainly other companies in other cities. If you're looking to start at the bottom (entry-level) respond to ads for editorial assitants. Try these sites: Media Bistro and Journalism Jobs. Publishers offer internships too.

What kind of a degree is needed for these jobs? Does it need to be in any specific field or do they figure they can train you to do what they need no matter what?

I recently went to a discussion that had about 10 local publishers where I live speak about the publishing world. It was very interesting but it seems like they all reiterated just how hard it is to get into the field. A few good tips they did give however were know the publisher you either want to work for or write for. If you want to write for a specific magazine reda through the actual magazine to know the set up. Also in an interview or aplication to get in don't tell what they can do for you; tell them what you can do for them.

They all stressed the importance of how computer and web design classes help tremendously and also how you're pretty much golden if you have an English/ Marketing degree.
