Do you shop in genres?

Do you look in the genre sections first in the bookstore or library? If so, which ones?

It seems like everyone I know has a genre they look in at the book store. My roommate heads for Sci Fi, my mom only looks in Mysteries, the woman across the aisle from me at work only reads Romances, and the one behind me only reads Horror.

I almost never like things I find in the genre sections. Almost all my favorite books are ones I found in Literature.

I read mostly science fiction and fantasy lately, so that's where I head first. Since some of the SFF I read is shelved in the young adult or horror areas, I head to those afterwards.

I never read anything out of the Genre sections. I always look in the general fiction or literature sections. I've read a few romance novels and I just feel like they're a waste of time when I'm done...like I might as well have just watched a movie. And I'm definately not into sci-fi or fantasy or mystery. That's just me though...

I hardly ever stray from the genre sections. In Borders I head for the magazines then the romance and mystery sections. They're right next to each other so I go into whichever one isn't as crowded. Then I make my way to the back of the store to young adult. If I can't find what I'm looking for, I look it up on the computer and usually find it in the literature section. Sometimes I can't understand WHY it's there but I'm not going to argue with them. I hit true crime on my way to the register.

I start sci-fi/fantasy then check horror. Occassionally I'll also check mystery.
Rarely anything else.

Oh, if we're counting non-fiction, I'm guilty. My first stop is always decorating. Then I have to see if there are any new lunatics publishing in New Age. And no trip is complete with out a stop in Psychology/Mental Illness.

I'm always going first in the 'english books' section (I live in France)... go figure and then in the general/litterature section.

I usually always head to different sections each time, depending on my mood. Sometimes it's general fiction, sometimes horror and mystery.

In second-hand bookstores I always head straight to 'nostalgia' And then to theatre/cinema related books. In new bookstores, well basically I don't buy anything new anyway so I just browse the media books And in libraries, 791.43 and 927.9 are my homes in the non-fiction shelves That's cinema and biographies They don't keep fiction books by genre here, they're just all lumped together.

I hardly ever read books from a particular genre. I just start browsing anywhere. If a book looks good I'll get it

At least over here the paper backs have an own section in the store, so I go there first. Usually, though, I already know what I want when I go into a bookstore so I try to find that particular book first.

Whenever I go to a bookstore, I always check out the magazines first, then I head towards the general paperback fiction novels... Afterwards, I'll sometimes check out the Performing Arts section for the books pertaining to movies and celebrities...
