Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth #2: One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you.
Divergent by Veronica Roth Book 1: Divergent In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her. Book 2: Insurgent Book 3: Coming 2013 One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love. Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so. Yay for a new thread. Not much left in the book for me to read before I finish!

I was shocked that Caleb turned on her. That really dissapointed me because I was starting to enjoy their relationship, but what a twist!
So on the ending I'm confused, was Edith the mother? I can't recall them saying her name. Towards the end with all the comments about what was outside the fence I started to suspect that they were some sort of experiment and/or some sort of independent nation, but I still enjoyed the reveal. __________________

No, Natalie was her mother. I guess Edith was Tris's grandmother, Tris's mother's mother.
Yeah, I was disappointed when Caleb turned on her too. I wasn't expecting that. |

I thought Caleb turning was part of the simulation at first, but then as the book went on I realized it was real.
So did everyone else take from the ending that Edith and all the others were criminals who underwent memory loss to pay for their crimes? I wonder why Chicago was sectioned off. So many questions. __________________

They just talk about Chicago being separated into Factions. What about the rest of the country? Does it just not exist?

Maybe there are other cities with factions but Edith was only charge of Chicago? I'm sure we'll find out more about the outside world in the last book.
Were you guys surprised by the ending? I kinda expected something like this because there was that one hint dropped in Divergent when Four takes the initiates to the gate and Tris notices how weird it is that the gate is locked from the outside, like it's them being locked in and not the other way around. I just don't get why Amity is outside of the gate. I knew going in that Caleb will turn into a traitor. I accidentally ran into that spoiler and I was so mad about it. I love sibling relationships and I wish I could have enjoyed it at least in the beginning but knowing Caleb would later turn on her... I just couldn't. I hope he'll realizes his mistakes in the last book and Tris will be able to forgive him in the end, though I'm not sure I would in her shoes... he would have let Jeanine kill her which is HUGE. At this point, I'm starting to like Peter better than Caleb. __________________
