In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Welcome  ACE732

I loved the book so much as well.

Hi

I was expecting the book to just be a bad Hunger Games rip off but it had me gripped from the beginning and the characters were awesome. Tris really came into her own towards the end of the book. And Four was just the sweetest. I cried at the end with her parents. It was so sad. Can't wait for the next book. And :yay: it's gonna be a movie!

I had heard the compairsons to HG and wasn't sure if it would hold up.. not only did it do so, it was just as good.
There was definitely more romance in this book than there was in HG, but it fits well in with the story.

I loved Tris.. for a 16 yr old.. she is much stronger than I would have been at that age. The things she goes through and the things she has to do.. I probably would have been knocked out in the first round
And Four.. loved him.. I loved how protective he was of her.. from the very beginning, and then things grew for them.
Her mom  she was so selfless.

I loved HG but that was one of the things that bugged me, not enough Peeta and Katniss romance

As for Tris, I probably would have ran away and hid somewhere

The first real hint of feelings for Four was probably when he walked out during her fight. Tris thought he didnt care, but I think he just couldnt bare to watch her get hurt and not do anything about it.

Ah yes. When he walked out.. I knew it wasn't that he didn't care.. I knew.. it was probably he couldn't bare to watch it happen.

I'm sure there was a wall with a fist shaped hole in it after he walked out

I wouldn't be surprised  I really hated Eric from the beginning.

Thanks. It was really good first book.

I found the world it was set in really interesting, but are there other cities in the States? Unless I missed it, I couldn't really gauge how many people were living in Chicago or if there were other countries/cities. They wanted control of the government, but I gathered it was just Chicago.

Add me please! Jen you know how much I love this book!

I had the feeling that since the city is so separate (like they get locked in, and can't leave if you remember, the lock on the gate was from the outside) at this point it doesn't matter but I do wonder if there are other people like jeanine in other cities doing similiar things or if she acted alone, in other words are all the Erudite factions connected?
