The Davinci Code

Ive been reading the Davinci Code. Its really a great read. Its had me on my heels wanting more. Has anyone else read it out there?

Basically if you like art, conspiracy theories, religion, suspence and drama....this has it all.

i bought the book last weekend, but i also purchased two others - and so i was intensenly reading Pursuit..which i have misplaced and picked up the Dogs of Babel.

So in a few weeks i will come back and post something about DaVinci code....did you hear there is some gossip and talk about the writer...did he plagarize this book?

I didn't actually hear about any plagiarizing..but he does grab and use various points of reference that have been used in other books.

It's not a plagiarization of other books. Dan Brown's book is essentially a historical fiction - it's a novel based on aspects of historial facts or theories introduced by other people. He merely expands on the ideas. If you're going by hardcore plagiarism, I doubt it - I'm pretty sure that most of the stuff he's talked about is pretty confirmed in general. In fact, much of the idea of the background of the story from a theory produced in the late 1980s or 90s in a book called Holy Blood, Holy Grail. I don't think there was any copyright infringement, that I know of. And I don't think that there was any direct lifting of passages from HBHG, anyway, considering that HBHG is essentially a thesis and in sort of a documentary form, not novel-form.

Anyway, in that long, confusing ramble up there, I was essentially saying, "I doubt it".

I loved the book, btw, as much as I loved Dan Brown's previous work, Angels and Demons. I've got to read Deception Point next.

I wanna buy this book cuz I'm really into art and all that other good stuff you talked about, but they're only selling the hardback version...the paperback version isn't coming out until a few more months

I really have to say that (post a discussion with my guy friend last night) you should all read Angels and Demons before you read The DaVinci Code, as the male lead first appears in A&D.

Other bibliomysteries that I recommend besides Dan Brown's novels are:

books by Iain Pears, Umberto Eco, and Katherine Neville, all very well known bibliomystery writers. (Bibliomystery is the classification that all these books fit under).

Umberto Eco's "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum" are excellent books, but you might have to use "The Key to the Name of the Rose" for the former, as I believe that there were some italian words left over from the original version (which is in Italian) that might be referenced in the supplementary book.

I've seen many students at my school reading this book between classes. I might see if our library has it.

This book is amazing. Read it in an hour and a half, couldn't put it down. I'm a conservative Catholic, and some of my dad's siblings are members of the Opus Dei (even my uncle is a priest), and I have to say there really are truths in that book. Other than the fact that Dan Brown is a brilliant writer. Its the first book of his' that I've read; read the blurb once because it mentioned Opus Dei and it being a Catholic mafia of some sort. Then my friend introduced me to the Code quest which was a lot of fun You guys should try it (www.davincicode.com). I'll check out Angels and Demons next.

Thanks for the info! I've heard a lot about this book, and I didn't know there was another one before it.

"The Name of the Rose" is one of my favorite books, and I only read it in English. I tried "Focault's Pendulum," but I got frustrated with it on about page 10. I was like, "Stop with the metaphores and get to the story, already!" I'm also struggling with "The Island of the Day Before." It's not that it's hard to read, it's just that he isn't making me care enough to finish it. I love his shorter stuff though, like "How to Travel with a Salmon."
