~*Comfort Books

~*I hope this hasn't been started before but do any of you have books that you read when you are feeling down? You pick them up and feel comforted just like comfort food. I have a few that make me feel that way. Sometimes when I am feeling down I pull out novels from my childhood and feel oddly safe and comforted by reading them.
There is also a book called Joanna's Husband/David's Wife and it is told in diary form by the wife with the husband writing his version of what happened after each entry. It's a really good book and I have read it so many times the characters are like family almost.
Last but not least I will pull out Flowers In The Attic and read that and Petals in The Wind by VC Andrews. I think they comfort me becuase when I was 15 I got very sick and was bedridden for a year. I read and reread those books many times that year.
Anyway I hope it was okay to start a thread since I don't post often in here!

I always feel better after I've read The Ladies of Missalonghi--Sometimes fairy tales can come true-even for plain, shy spinsters like Missy Wright. Neither as pretty as cousin Alicia nor as domineering as mother Drusilla, she seems doomed to aquiet life of near poverty at Missalonghi, her family's pitifully small homestead in Australia's Blue Mountains. But It's a brandnew century-the twentieth-a time for new thoughts and bold new actions. And Missy Wright is about to set every self-righteous tongue in the town of Byron wagging. Because she has just set her sights on a mysterious, mistrusted and unsuspecting stranger ... who just might be Prince-Charming in disguise.

When I'm upset or sick I read Bridget Jones's Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason.

They make me laugh a lot and take my mind off whatever's wrong with me.

I like to reread some of my childhood books when I'm feeling a bit down. Nothing specifically, just things that I had when I was younger.

Definitely Anne of Green Gables or Anne of Avonlea. I've read them so many times, but each time I get that warm fuzzy feeling from enjoying them SO much.

Also, Harry Potter. If I have nothing to read, I grab one of those, because you know it's gonna be a fun ride.

Also, the "Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging" series by Louise Rennison. No other books ahve ever made me laugh so hard.

I like the Baby-Sitter's Club, pathetic, since I'm 17, but it always makes me feel so much better reading about their cheesy adventures. It takes me more or less than an hour to read, too.

Took the words right right out of my head, though I read and love EOR more. Harry Potter is also a safe bet, as is Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and Watermelon by Marian Keyes.

And also an old favourite of mine, Little Women/Good Wives by Louisa May Alcott, but that usually makes me more depressed because I cry bucketfuls every single time I read it, the text is literally blurred by my tears. Ah well, crying is therapeutic.

When I'm down or really tired, I always pick a book to relax. I don't really mind the genre, as long as it's a book that I love.
But I generally pick a funny book, or a children book that reminds me of my childhood. Bridget or Anne are usually very welcome when I'm down!

More pathetic, I'm 22 and do the same And when I go to the library to get text books I see what BSC books they have that I haven't read, just because with all the heavy subjects I feel like I need something light and fluffy that I can read in 45 minutes and then get back to the heavy stuff

For cheering up, I tend to grab Bridget Jones and just read a few random pages. If I have more time, something like A Little Princess or The Neverending Story, my two stalwart favourites

Great topic!

Apart from my fave kiddie book of all time, Molly Moves Out, I love reading random chapters of Harry Potter books. I have read each of the 5 books at least 10 times each, so it's nice just to pick favourite chapters and remember how good they are.

Especially when you know almost all the lines by heart...

I always go for Ella Enchanted. That book never fails to cheer me up. Also the Bridget Jones books.

The Big Orange Splot which is my favorite kids book ever and then Pride and Prejudice—one of my all time favorite classic books.

the Confessions series by Sophie Kinsella is also another good book that'll cheer me up.
