I enjoyed that new SJM book too, though of course it was mostly filler.

Summer and Bird by Katherine Catmull

I wanted so much more from this book. When I read the premise, it sounded right up my alley. Two sisters going on an adventure after their parents leave them under mysterious circumstances, the mom leaving them a picture message that they have to figure out, a swan (the mom) turning into a human after shedding her robe (sort of like a selkie) - all of this is interesting. But the adventure I expected was minimal. It seemed like in every chapter, I had to read about one or both of the sisters getting tired and falling asleep. The sleeping should've been edited out and replaced with fun, zany characters and hijinx.

Speaking of characters - I did like the Puppeteer and wish there was more of her. I ended up thinking the story should've been about the Puppeteer vs. the mom (swan).

Love, Lies and Spies by Cindy Anstey - It's wasn't bad, but it wasn't a deep read either. I can only imagine that trying to write for a different century can't be an easy task, and I'm no expert, but the writing sometimes feel a bit forced, almost fake. Also contrary to some of the reviews on goodreads there is spying, but it's very low-key not Bourne/Jame Bond type, so if one is looking for that they'll be disappointed. The characters weren't overly intriguing, but not awful or completely dull. The book in general is just a light fluffy read. There was some moments at the beginning and at the end that captured me. Overall it was eh, but sweet. I didn't mind reading it. **

Olivia Twist by Lorie Langdon – I should make clear that I have never read the book, seen the musical play, and I don’t think even seen Oliver Twist on television aside from some clips. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge to enjoy this book. I read it in two days, which shows how glued I was to it. If I could I would have stayed up all night to finish it. lol I really, really enjoyed it. I loved a lot of the characters especially the leads, the writing was great, and the story was intriguing. The romance, while a bit rough around the edges, was crackling and wonderful. Unlike the other period piece book I read the writing didn't take me out of the book at all. It isn't perfect, the last few chapters were a bit weak, but it didn't take away the joy I had when reading it. It's my favorite book I've read so far this year. ****

this heart of mine by C.C. Hunter - The premises sounded interesting. A girl gets a heart transplant begins having dreams about donor that leads her to work with donor's twin bother, who is also having dreams, to uncover truth about donor's death. Sadly that wasn't the case for this book. Only a few pages into and I knew this wasn't going to be good and it kept it up. The writing is bad, the pacing is bad, and it was boring. I rolled my eyes as least a dozen times. The romance in the book was flat and dead as a fish. The romantic scenes weren't written well at all. It's very force too. I didn't believe in this life altering connection one bit and I don't know why they fell for each other. The male lead got on my nerves with his leap of logic and insensitivity to those who were also hurting. You know the writer wanted you feel for him, but it didn't work for me. While the lead female wasn't as bad she came off flat. The mystery wasn't any better it was dull. In the end the book was a lot of talk and not much for showing. * 1/2
