Am I weird for getting excited over books?

My friend and I were in Sydney last week for some school study day and we walked past a used bookshop. Now, I can't go past one without going in, so I said "Ooh! A bookshop!", totally forgetting my friend doesn't know I love books so much.
She replied "Yeah, so what? You wouldn't want to be seen in there, would you?"

And at school, I think I'm the only one who gets excited over getting a new Emglish book, even if it's supposed to be boring.

I understand why people looked at me like I was crazy when I was carrying Gone With The Wind around, reading it in every spare moment I had (I loved so much I couldn't put it down)
But is it really that weird?
Am I weird for getting excited over books?

Don't worry, you're not the only one. English is my favourite subject at school so I go through that whole.."Yay...new book" phase at the start of every term...

Well, I didn't care for English. I hated the discussions and paper writing. But I'm all about books. I can spend hours in a book store and not buy a thing. I can be content with just looking at them and reading the covers and stuff. It's my addiction.

i HATE reading a book in school and then talk about it but otherwise i love books!
I'm always reading atleast 2 different books at the same time and people think I'm sick for choosing books over TV.
so don't worry,if you are weird..you are certainly not alone.

awww, I used to read books over watching tv when I was little also.

You are not weird at all. I get excited over books and can spend hours in bookstore, even if I don't buy anything. Just going around the stacks, reading the jackets, etc...

Are you kidding? The bookstore is the first thing I look for in the mall! Books are my signature gift for any holiday. I love the smell of new and really old books. I've read my favorite book @ least 12xs. Most of my friends and classmates in HS mocked me (not in a mean way) for reading so much. And I never understood why they didn't read.

For school--nah, I never get excited. I hate being told what to read. There were maybe 2 books in all of HS that I enjoyed: Cold Sassy Tree, and The Bean Trees. Now that I'm in college, no one does that. It's nice.

And I avoid going into bookstores b/c I can't go in and not buy anything!

Doan worry, hun. I nearly pee my pants every time I hear of a book sale, but my mum still has to drag me to go shopping. I carry a book around all the time, too, read everywhere possible at every possible chance. My friends think it's weird that I bring a book to a party, but then again, my books outnumber my friends.

Naw, think about where you're posting this.

I hated English in school, though it was remarkably easy; the actual reading and writing, I love and consume voraciously to this day.

No, your not weird at all I'm the same way. The first thing that I do when I go to the mall is head for the bookstore I love it I can spend like hours in there because there are a ton of books that I look for and want to get.

Like for the Harry Potter series I get super excited because I'm such a big fan of the book series.

No, you're not weird.

"Weird" is my friend in high school who was such a book addict that she even took books to parties and spent half the party sitting in the corner reading.

"Weird" is my best friend who has so many books she had to get three people and a U-haul trailer to move only 2/3 of them. (She had a moving company move the rest.)

"Weird" is my roommate who makes several hundred dollars a month selling her used books on Ebay ... and her remaining books are still taking up most of her room and half of the study.

"Weird" is my dad having at least 2 copies of everything by Nikos Kazantzakis and 6 collections of Ibsen plays.

I feel positively normal in comparison.

Definitely not. I always browse around in bookstores for hours on end.

I have a couple hundred books and when I was younger I used to go over to friends' houses and I would always wonder why they had like two books. I couldn't understand it.

To the rest of the world, it might seem weird, but for bibliophiles like us here at the FF book board, you're perfectly normal. Personally, I think it's really sad that something as enjoyable and enlightening as reading is so ridiculed. It says a lot more about the person slinging the insults than it does about us though. I always get excited when i get a new book. a lot of people say that college ruins their desire to read, but it hasn't for me. everytime i visit home, i got by Barnes and Nobles or Borders. I even go to my student store to look at the books when i have time between classes. i think of it this way, i'm normal its everyone else that's weird.
